Martin O'Neill

He was a joke. Playing a game on a Saturday then him but more importantly letting the players have a few days off then come back on a Thursday. Lazy lazy manager who would never be able to manage in the modern game. He football was embarrassingly bad to watch
Aye - how’s his missus doing these days?

I think “excellent hit rate” is being more than kind.
Take out his tenure at Celtic and the couple of jobs where he managed twenty games or less and his “hit rate” is far from excellent. Just have a look at his win percentage on wiki.
I think anything above ‘journeyman manager with some modest success sitting more credit than he’s earned.

You heard of his Leicester record where he's idolised ?

Well the Di Fantai appointment meant the end of Martin O’Neill.

People have selective memories Martin O'Neill kept us up but it rarely gets mentioned on here.

I remember he kept us up, but then I remember Di Canio did also. Ultimately I remember him for wasting a load of money and playing the least enjoyable football from my time as a Sunderland fan.

Don't get me wrong, I dont dislike the chap but as far as Sunderland tenure go, I remember one spent the thick end of 300m on us, horribly, and the other heavily contributed to the short terms decisions that saw us plummet.

Bollocks

Pretty much my feelings. He was probably a product of the shitshow of an environment around the club at the time, but you are right about the football we played (outside of that initial 15 games or so)

He did a very similar job on Villa in regards to finances, he was very much of his time with Leicester. I dont know the celtic situation well, but I wouldn't be shocked if they suffered financially after. Cheers for the 6 months though, if i had to pick one time for us between him and short, it'd be an easy choice.

Simon Jordan is a tossa
Are you surprised as a previous club owner looks at the game itself only in terms of finances? In the long run statistically unless your spurs (consistently for decades under performing with a high revenue)those clubs with the most financial clout populate the top six places in the prem...

Personally i think KLD is looking to establish Sunderland around the 7th to 10 spot in the medium term (and that wont be easy as we trade players)and then from that position of stability use that as a launching point for a push for the champions league, perhaps not consistently year on year but still growing the club....

Truthfully Simon is right these new(and the old ones for that matter) financial rules makes it harder to compete with the likes of the arse but that doesnt mean we cannot try to do so on the pitch with a good manager and a talented team with a work ethic to match. We are light years ahead of where we were three years ago and i firmly believe if we can manage to keep hold of Granit for the next 5 years (in whatever capacity)somebody on here in five years time will be posting "We are light years ahead of where we were three years ago" and i hope im around to see it!

Don't think it's fair to say he wasted a load of money. We only paid fees for 4 players - Johnson, Fletcher, Graham and N'Diaye. Johnson and Fletcher were good players for us, we got 3.5 years of good service from them both and Johnson obviously would have been one of our best players for years to come had he not done what he did. Ndiaye looked decent and had a good career but was immediately bombed out by Di Canio - even after Di Canio left people were still calling for Poyet to recall and use him. Graham was the only complete dud and should never have been signed but it was £5m not £50m - we spent more than that on Altidore and similar to the N'Diaye fee on Buckley, Bridcutt etc.

We were 16th in the league when he was sacked and finished 17th, having only needed 5 points from 7 games to stay up.

Not defending O'Neill in particular as he was ultimately a shit manager amongst a list of other shit managers but it kind of amuses me when people still go on about that Norwich game when it wasn't even our worst performance at home to Norwich during that era.

Di Canio never kept us up man.

We finished lower than we were when he was appointed.

For the time Johnson and Fletcher were huge sums for us and on big wages. Fletcher had a couple of months but was on the whole garbage and the other one, imo gets remembered better for his Derby performances. Cuellar and co on daft wages. Everyone bought in other than ndiaye who I assume wasnt oneils signing would either be difficult to shift or impossible.

I doubt he would have got 5 points from those games but who knows. Either way, he hammered the squad, hammered the budget and played the worst football I've seen and I sat through the end of Buxton.

No hard feelings, it just didn't work out, perhaps he relied too heavily on his number 2.

Can't be proved either way. But I highly doubt oneill would have got 6 points, we were finished.
