I've looked into this and can't find any evidence to support this. I think it was a rumour that got out of hand. If it was butchered by anything it was the fanzine revolt. Your fixation on that is weird mind. Tynemouth is canny for surfing. Its not Hawaii but few places in the UK are. All you're doing is trying to belittle your own region and making fun of a hobby that's great for fitness, even if the waves aren't 30ft high.
