Making a PC

I fancy having a crack at building a PC. Thoughts and advice would be appreciated.

Ill be using it for a wide spectrum of stuff including photoshop / CAD, office based and gaming. Id like it to have a little breathing room to not require updating within the next 2 years.

My Budget is £1200. I would prefer this to cover Moniter, Keyboard & Mouse and Speakers although I accept this may be cutting too fine.

I have without doing a great deal of research picked this build out

Anyone have any thoughts? Have a better build? Potential Conflicts? More than needed?

Leaves you with £19.49 of your budget for a monitor.

The advice on here is generally that you're often better off just buying one these days.

Sites get better deals on components than you as they are buying hundreds of graphics cards etc. As the market is competitive you see savings.

Don't do this. Don't buy pre-built man. Just have a go building it yourself. Look up guides, and watch out for putting components onto anything that carries static. It'll be cheaper and it can be canny fun to build.

I built one in the past which was great. Looking to do it again at some point soon. If building one scares the shit out of you, configure one with PC Specialist and have them build it. Their prices can vary though.

Just a first draft bud, also stated there is flexibility on the monitor etc. Good input though.

I'm certainly going to compare what I can get prebuilt with warranty's etc but its something I would like to do out of interest and to build my limited knowledge. If at the end of the day I can get more bang for my buck out of pre built I will go that way.

I remember you being an skyrim mods chap, I blew my computer after adding a huge amount, out of interest can you tell me the specific parts that these mods would of taxed and what I would need to run an unlimited amount of them?

Yea I hoped It would be interesting, do you have any specific links you found helpful on stuff to do with static etc?

When I say pre-built I don't mean PC world ya knacker

CPU and graphics, never had a component blow like that before personally, just overheat and shut itself off.

Poor choice of words from me, didn't actually blow up just overheated a fair few times and eventually caused a very long winded issue that was corrected in the end by pushing the power button in for 2 minutes (after multiple people attempting to fix, a million windows reloads and 3 weeks), true story.

Seems good. I'd get a dedicated SD for Win10, another SD for my apps then store all my downloads/files on the HD. Also, does your MB not come with onboard network & wifi though?

If you're not bothered about the case, you can save yourself a few quid. This Fractal one I have is good
You can shave a few quid off the SSD, I use this one
Personally, I'd rather have the CPU water cooled too

Ive put an SD in for windows but not considered one for apps etc, Im not sure I could afford one big enough for games etc but maybe useful for photoshop etc, seems it could be quiet costly?

I had hoped someone would mention the network input, I haven't research the board enough yet but would assume it would come with one but not the wireless, would that be the standard with most mb's?

Thanks for the options, I appreciate them, do you think the set up requires water cooling, I have very little experience in the cooling aspect?

I def noticed a massive difference when putting Win on an SD. Not so much for apps, but there are certain ones I use all the time that I've noticed loading and processing speed much better.
My 5yr old mobo has network, Bluetooth & wifi as standard. Surprised if they all (bar the cheapest) don't now. Should be easy enough to see from the specs.

Wouldnt bother, its much less hassle and usually cheaper to buy one ready made as suppliers generally get the parts cheaper than you can and if anything goes wrong its one person to deal with. Also a good builder should have juggled with different combinations of components to get the most efficient system. Youd get a beast for £1200 mind

This is the best advice if you want the best bang for your buck. If you look in the right places it's cheaper than sourcing your own parts and building it yourself. The problem here (and has been mentioned) is that some people assume pre-built only means the overpriced shit you get from chain stores. Avoid those and have a look for the much better ones online that have fantastic deals and can save you a lot.

I can't believe I'm agreeing with @Some Random Guy again, ffs. Kill me

I'm fairly adept at finding decent ones online, my last 3 or so years ago was from chill blast and was a good deal. I hadn't realised that it would be cheaper than doing my own so I will probably do a build and send it to all the better companies out there.

Do you or anyone else recommend any places?

It may be cheaper buying a pre-build but there's no better satisfaction than putting a rig together yourself.

Plus you can save money by salvaging parts from your old PC.

I've just finished a gaming rig for £1k by re-using my old monitor, HDDs and PSU and putting in new mobo, case, water cooled cpu fan, 16GB DDR4 RAM, 120GB SSD, i7 6700k CPU and a GTX 1070 GPU.

Me and a few people I know have bought PCs from this store:

I've not checked out the prices in the last 18 months, but I'm guessing they are still good.

They have good deals mixed with poor ones. They have loads of different systems for sale, so make sure you pick a good setup combination.

This is true. I did that for decades as a hobby and a few years as a dodgy off the books job in America.
