Some joker on the Pompey Forum think they have a chance of signing him :

"Still hasn't signed a new contract at Sunderland & looks like he wants out. Has 16 league goals this season so far & 15 last season. Celtic are in for him at £500,000 & are prepared to loan him back for the rest of the season. Why don't we up the amount for a permanent deal & pay him decent wages with a bonus based on the number of goals he scores. Proven striker & only 20. This comes down to how ambitious the club is & how far they are prepared to go to ensure promotion. There aren't a lot of options out there that's why they were watching games in Europe recently. O.k. our recent form isn't great just need to get back on track & this type of player will help greatly. Celtic may not appeal to the player as he will be a bench warmer no doubt & only offered £500K. I didn't know that Cardiff were interested but they're staring relegation hard in the face. I'm just trying to be positive here unlike the pessimists."

We absolutely are not.

It’s one thing if a European powerhouse comes in with this type of offer but quite another when an average to poor top flight club come in. It’s not beyond the realms of possibility that in eightmonths time we will be operating in the same division as a club like West Ham.

I have no real idea of the actual figures involved, but if you do the sums then the principle is the same - is it worth it?

Say we persuade Josh to sign a new deal now, for three and a half years at £1 million a year. (It may be too late for that, if Cardiff or West Ham are offering him more.) We are committed to paying him £3.5 million over the period. That is a risk, but if when doing that deal we think that by summer 2020 Josh's value will be £1.5 million or more, then it's a good deal for us at that level. We could transfer Josh in 2020 for £1.5 million, and we'd have had him playing for us for no outlay whatsoever. Anything above £1.5 million and we'll have turned a profit.

Like I say, I have no idea of the true figures involved, but the principle is the same. We could agree to pay Josh Maja £2 million a year (£40,000 a week in football talk) and so long as we can sell him on in summer 2020 for £3 million then we'll have done well. If we agree to pay him £50,000 a week then we'd need to sell in June 2020 for about £3.75 million in order to recoup all of his wages (and therefore have him effectively play for us for free for 16 months). I don't think that selling for £3.75 million in 2020 would be unrealistic.

My view is that he is clearly a player, and that by next summer there will be at least a few clubs who would be prepared to buy his services for £3 million or more. The current offer talked about at the £2 million level may just reflect his current contractual status - with 2 years left on his contract I don't think a fee of £4 million next year is out of the question.

I think Josh Maja is an asset for us, not just in what he does on the pitch this season. Offering him more money to sign is obviously a risk to some degree, but in my view is one worth taking. I think the chances of Josh's value falling to below £1 million by summer 2020 are small indeed. Even selling at £1 million in June 2020 after paying him £1.8 million (£25,000 a week) wouldn't be the end of the world.

There are times when you have to back your judgment of a player. I've seen enough of this lad to bet that he'll be a successful player in the future. SAFC need to try and keep him here for the time being. What is the alternative? Relying on the the other players we currently have? No thanks. Again, I would back my judgement of their abilities. They are not good enough. If we are to try and buy a replacement, what would be the cost of a transfer fee and wages? And in 18 months' time,will we have a worthwhile asset? As much as I'd like us to find another Keven Phillips or Marco Gabbiadini, I think it's unlikely that we will.

So, all in all I think that we need to offer Josh enough to try and persuade him to stay. We may already have offered him as much as I think he's worth (and I would say he's worth paying at least £1.5 million a year) and it may now be too late. But I hope we're trying to sign him up and that we're being realistic with offers to him

Aye. But it isn’t beyond the realms of possibility that we are even in the top flight and them not.

The game moves fast and unpredictably. Unless you are one of the current top six (and Everton seemingly), then anything can happen. A couple of players leaving, a manager departing etc and you can plummet. And equally, with good management and / or financial investment, teams can climb fairly quickly too.

I wouldn’t entertain this mooted deal for Maja at all. It would send out an horrendous message IMO

Like I say, I have no idea of the figures they are talking about. It could be £300 a week, £3,000 a week or £30,000 a week. The principle is the same. If we think that by June 2020 we can sell Josh Maja for a sum equal to or more than 1.5 times his new annual salary, then it's worth us paying him that salary for 18 months then recouping it in full.

If Josh will sign for £10,000 a week, then we pay that for 18 months (a total of £1.5 million) then we sell him on for £1.6 million. That's a profit.

You talk shit...they’ve been trying to get the agent to the table and get the contract situated for months and heard zero feedback from agent...wtf do you think the deadline was for? Then offered him what he requested only to be blown off...there’s no fuckin reason the agent should act this way...they’re grown men ffs!

Deadline was to force the hand and really a bit of a farce as they’ve came out and said the offer is still
On the table fuck was the point in the deadline ?

Stewart Donald would have came out and said they were having problems with the agent coming to the table months ago if they were

The other thing is what’s quite annoying around October time they done a podcast saying embleton stryjek and June had all been offered new deals when in reality it’s seems like embleton has only just been offered a new deal

The deadline was to get the agent to the table as he wasn’t responding and also he decided not to show up at a meeting with the club he set up!

If anything the club has spoken about isn’t true it would be pretty easy for the agent to come out and disprove them.

The truth is they never wanted to re-sign and were counting on offers flooding in...which hasn’t happened.
