Obviously only time will tell if it is a good deal or not. Given that he wants to move on though getting anything like that fee looks pretty good considering he cost nowt, only proven at league 1 level and out of contract this summer. Suggests more than 1 seriously interested party have been pursuing him.

Shame he wants to leave but we are footballing nobodies these days.
I agree with you and I wouldn't be at all surprised if there was another twist to this, perhaps a higher offer from elsewhere ?
Still time.

What ever you dress this up we are having our pants absolutely pulled down at £3.5 million even if his contract is coming to an end. In 2010 we got £3.25 million for Waghorn with barely a goal to his name at any level, I would assume Waghorn’s contract wasn’t comingto an end but still, transfer fees have multiplied 10 fold since 2010 and Maja is a far better prospect than Waghorn ever was. Add in to the equation we are in the middle of probably the most critical season in the clubs history and he is the most valuable player in the team!
wello no transfrer fees for out of contract players going abroad havent multiplied...

man spends thousdands a week of his own dosh propping the club up and peiople are happy to call him a liar..
This is the same fella that threw Lee Cattermole under the bus in the summer with his "doesn't want to be here but won't leave a penny behind" comments. I'm not calling him a liar. I'm just saying we can't clarify that Josh Maja has refused to play for the club again.

Quite impressed that, if Bordeaux it is, a young lad has the guts to try and improve his game overseas, dealing with the cultural and football changes that implies, rather than tread an established route in the UK.

Nice part of the world, too.

Clubs know he’s out of contract at the end of the season and can walk on a free. We get nothing. I’m actually staggered that someone’s come in for him at all.

Waghorn had a successful loan at Leicester in the Championship the season before he was sold. Was a key player for them when they lost in the play-offs.

Dry your knickers man.

The alternative is he leaves for nothing, how is that a better deal?

Lots of young players doing it now. Seems be a viable route. Notice Hudson Odoi turned down a new 85k a week deal at Chelsea as he wants to go to Bayern. He's only 17!

Sancho and Reiss Nelson looking good in Germany. Ronaldo Viera left Leeds to go to sampdoria and has started in Seria A. Charlton lost a young player to go abroad but can't remember his name

Or more cynically his agent has pushed him into it because that's the deal he gets the biggest cut from.

Nah. Surely he'd get a bigger cut in the summer when he's out of contract. Especially if an English team came in for him.

What gets me with all of this is the statement made by Donald in which he stated that Maja was happy an wanted to stay but was listening to his agent. At this stage Maja responded that he would talk it over with his family and get back to the club.
As far as I'm aware Maja has not done this and his lack of a statement speaks volumes for his professionalism (or lack of it).
Why couldn't he be open and honest and pay the club back for the way they have conducted themselves throughout the transfer speculation.
If he had stated from the start he wanted to leave ita would have been better than leading the club into believing he wanted to stay. I wouldn't have been happy but would have understood.
They way this had been dragged out leaves a bad taste in the mouth.

The club’s probably always known this was going to be the outcome.

Lookman went on loan over there against Allardyce’s judgement and did well.

There's quite a few playing abroad at the minute and it's good to see.

Slightly different to Maja though as most like Sancho are going abroad for opportunity to play, where Maja is probably going to get less opportunity to play (could be wrong here like).

If we don't I don't think it will be for lack of trying. SD & CM must know how poorly it will go down if they lose Maja and don't adequately replace him.

Aside from the few idiots on here most sensible fans will accept there was it ever so much they could do to keep Maja given the contract situation and will accept losing him. Not replacing him won't be so easily forgiven.

From what I’ve seen most fans blame Maja for wanting away which in fairness is like 70% of the problem. Other 30% being the old regime being shite IMO.

Money will allow us a good replacement. I’m pretty sure we have the money to get at least one good striker. So as you say, not replacing him will be unforgivable

Only time will tell if it is a good move for the kid. As for us, he is 19 and the club will move on. If our future was reliant on one 19 year old we are playing the wrong game.
For the past three months, our future has relied on a 'keeper saving almost everything and Maja scoring almost everything. We're in a really bad place, now.

Ah yeah forgotten about him. Another boy from Charlton too
