What if the club gave him 3 or 4 options and said here are options for any way you want the contract to be, that keeps your options open but also protects us that if we don’t get promoted and a club comes in for you we get a nice fee...? What if Maja gets hurt and sits out most of the next half a season and we get promoted...maybe that option is in there too. What if we gave every scenario and his agent comes back and says, we want to wait out the window to see if any Championship clubs come in...? What would be your advise to Stewart??

My advise to SD would be to keep Maj at the club as long as possible unless he's made it clear he's no intention of signing and there's an offer on the table greater than his value to us over 2nd half of season - £2.5M or more.

If I was Maja's agent I'd be suggesting he wait it out to the summer by when he'll know if we've achieved promotion and can negotiate with us as a Championship club and his role in getting us there knowing he's free to go with sign on fee to new club and having proven himself further in 2nd half of the season. The only risk for him would be if his performances tailed off or he got injured.

Was from someone who I know knows someone at the club although I don’t often get much info from him.

Fair enough - just doesn't seem likely that he'd sign a professional contract with an EPL club in 2016 for £600 pw although there's a possibility he may have signed for Academy for that in 2015. I think even if this source is ITK with some info he has this wrong or is out of date.

What if Maja just doesnt want to sign? What do you want the club to do???[/QUOTE]

If he doesn’t want to sign fine. He is still under contract until the summer. How much will we realistically get for him in this window? 3-4m tops. And how much at tribunal? 2m minimum I would think. Looking at a difference of probably not much more than a million...

Now equate that figure to promotion or not. Is it worth taking 1m more now but significantly jeopardize promotion chances. From a purely business perspective the owners are savy enough to do the maths. It doesn’t add up.

I don’t think Maja will sign a new contract. I think he will just sit on the current one till the end of the season. If we go up, we have a chance of keeping him and him signing a new contract. If we don’t he can sign for whoever he wants after a wages bidding war and we will get the requisite compensation. I don’t see this as being that bad for either party.

What if he agrees to go elsewhere when his contract expires and loses all interest in playing for us and he's a shell of a player he's been so far?

I would think that highly unlikely. The club he agrees to go to will still have safeguards to ensure they are getting what they think they’re getting. Player would gain nothing by being unprofessional whilst preparing to go to a new employer. I would think it would be the opposite. He will want to impress.

His contract negotiations would take months anyway!

I think it’s more likely he got paid more in the prem but back to back relegations have cut it. I don’t know if it true like. Just something he told me a few weeks back.

He isn’t a new player though and whilst he’s currently a league 1 player by definition he’s not like one of these that signs a two year contract then moves to another league 1 side when it runs out then repeats. He’s 19 and playing at a level below where he should be because he’s at a club that’s nose dived since he signed and is currently probably our most important player.

That’s the worry like. I’ll be very disappointed if that is the case.

Don't get me wrong as i think he's developing well and is exactly what we need for this league.

Last seasons stats however...

17 Games, 1 goal in the Championship. Is he what we need to progress to the next level?

I think the deadline is so that the club has the opportunity to plan ahead which is what they should be doing.

Not sure how fees are set for u23’s but surely if he was to score another 15 goals this season, 30 ish for the season it’s got to have a fairly significant impact on his value? No way should he be sold in this window

James Hunter reporting he's told JR he wants to stay - hopefully great news
JR has said that all along. He’s also said there’s outside factors he can’t control. Unfortunately the way the game is now it’s the case that what the player wants, at least from a footballing perspective, isn’t always the main thing.

That’s a rollercoaster of a read. From Ross’ quotes you go from being confident he’ll stay to thinking there’s no chance!

I’m desperate for him to stay. I really think he’ll go on to be a top player. Plus we don’t create enough chances at present not to be reliant on his extraordinary conversion rate.

Agree however the risk is if he signs for a non UK club we would be due no compensation. Promotion is and should be the only target this season regardless of how we do it

Plan ahead for what? Him leaving in the summer? They would need to do that regardless.

The signs havnt been good for a while and the club have only been confident in the Gooch deal TBF. If it turns around today , then it's great news. Would be a shame too as it's another one where the agent is pushing and hawking him about. The player, with the right agent would sign IMO.
