Haway Tadge - giz a clue? Rapey? Did you mean ropey? - even then just saying when I pass through Consett on the way to Blanchland it's all bordering Northumberland.

Went to school with his sister and Herdy was in the year below, was in the same year as @General Zod IIRC, (might be the same class?). Whole family are Mags.

Consett was a split town when I was at school, and as has been said, '92 happened.

Herdy was in the year above me, his mrs was in my year, I knew them both very well. When he was younger he used to follow either Man Utd or Liverpool (can't remember which) but in his early teens he decided he should support one of the north east teams. He felt both out but when he went to Roker he was in the Fulwell end acting a bit daft (nothing too bad or anti-Sunderland or pro-Newcastle, just being a daft early teenager) and a fully grown bloke turned around & smacked him in the face. Understandably put him off going back to support Sunderland, and made his decision about who to support a bit easier, though he did work as a coach for us for a while with the kids.

Good to see him doing well with Canada, but for a dodgy bit of reffing could quite easily have made the olympics final with them

Sadly, a huge chunk of Co. Durham identity was lost in the mid 70's when politics created the county of Chalk & Cheese (tyne & WEAR). Then there was the Keegoon thing and the development of the Bigg Market and the Quayside, when Co. Durham folk crossed the evil river for a good night out.

My roots are East Durham and when I was was a kid maggots in East Durham were as rare as rocking horse shite. Ripped from the bosom of Charlie Hurley and brought West to Cumberland, now Cumbria, and that's another thing that pisses me off, and also those of my generation that live down Barrow way who still regard themselves as Lancastrians. Anyway, back to the Keegoon thing. Going back home to visit family, all of a sudden there's barcodes to seen walking around Horden, Easington, Blackhall, Wingate, Wheatley Hill and so on.

It stinks. But the creating of tyne & WEAR and everything that went with it saw a huge cultural shift of New****le being the centre of the North East and everywhere else being a suburb.

Which is why the vermin have always had larger crowds....most people support their closest team, Newcastle have 2 or 3 times people living close to them than Sunderland do.

The transport links to newcastle are much better as well (witness darlington station being wick with them when they are playing at home. Despite being nearly 40 miles away the train only takes them half an hour) By contrast travel to watch Sunderland the traditional County Durham team from the likes of darlington, durham or bishop Auckland involves changing trains at either newcastle or thornaby - much more of a chew.

I was born in Shotley Bridge and lived in Consett for all of my life until about 18 months ago. I'm 22 so left school not so long ago but the vast majority of people in my year were Newcastle fans. Most of my childhood friends are Newcastle fans too. However, in my class at school there were 3 SAFC fans including myself, and obviously 15-20 Newcastle fans, who do you think had the season tickets? The only people who used to go to the games regularly were the Sunderland fans and that is the God's honest truth.

I watched the 1-1 game at St James' there in March 2012, it was quite an experience. :lol:
