Luke O'Nien

its fine to say he played poorly against villa. thats pretty much universally agreed on. no one is arguing any different

the argument comes with the reaction to that game. the comments on here and social media were way, way, way over the top. 'he should never play again' type comments, and 'he's not good enough for the premier league'', that type of thing. over and over and over.

yet here he is, with 10 appearances, of which 6 are full or almost full games, with a couple of man of the match performances, 5 or 6 very good performances, and 5 wins under his belt and only one defeat.
I get all that I ignore the over top reaction to any bad performance or mistake as 9 times out of 10 people are just frustrated and don't particularly mean it (with O'Nien or any other player and manager) . However there is also a lot of fans across all forums/socials who simply can't accept any criticism of him even when it's vaild!
I mean I've just had someone using whataboutery with 2 players of other clubs to somehow make up for a poor performance

O Nien and the way he carries himself both on and off the pitch and strives to improve, motivate others and do his best is a staple of being a valued Sunderland player and something the fans look for IMO.

I can watch this kind of player all day, yes he will make mistakes, but he will give his all. I can live with that.

we have a special kind of player/person here, he gets it/us and always has it seems, value it, Rodwell etc was a better player, which type would you choose?

I hope he gets through Sunday and its plays out like someone has describes already, if not, I'll stay and clap them off the pitch, because they deserve it and none more so than O Nien.

No I'm talking about one of our players. I don't care about Liverpool's players.
He was poor v Villa and Watkins highlighted why he isn't a regular in our side. He played well on Saturday and I praised him for that. It's absolutely weird people can't accept any criticism of him.
I just ask for consistency. I didn’t see anywhere near the same criticism when we lost 0-5 the week after. He’s held to a higher standard. Leeds, Newcastle, Spurs, Everton he’s won in.

He isn't though. All players get stick. The stick after the Forest game was off the scale. It could be argued he gets a lot more leniency off a lot of fans as well.

I didn’t see anyone questioning if anyone was up to the level or if Forest exposed their limitations. It was largely taken as a one off shitter of a performance. O’Nien has one bad game and it’s that he’s “limited” and “not up to the level” The shit he got before he even came on was ridiculous on Sunday. Shut them all up.

That one on Beto is outstanding, as the ball from Reinildo is awful, it’s nowhere near a 50/50, probably 70/30 in Beto’s favour.

He has his limitations, but I’m not in the least bit surprised he’s adapted to the premier league. Super intelligent lad, constantly learning and wanting to improve. He’s been one of our best signings of recent years, given the state we were in when he came in. Up there with the likes of SKP and Ball, signed for peanuts and way surpassed expectations.

He’ll finish his career here.

It's a factual argument that he showed up his limitations and that he is limited. It was in response to him being supposedly tatgetted . Not sure why you're getting upset about it

The debate thing works both ways. Some can't seem to accept any criticism of him, even when it's warranted. You can be critical and still like a player. Look at this thread, I said he wasn't tatgetted by Villa but that game and particularly Watkins showed up his limitations. That happened. The response, so what they showed up two other players from another club. With some it's like a cult.

O'Nien is a lovely lad , good player and as good a professional we've ever seen at our club. Nowt but admiration for him
The way some people go on about him is as if he’s their brother in law and his flaws and limitations as a footballer shouldn’t ever allowed to be spoke about or brought to light

End of the day we all know he is not Prem class and he is not our future but he is a cracking lad who just seems to very rarely let us down and when called upon gives his all.

Played well when he came on on Sunday and if he doesnt start this week then he will still be there on the bench making sure he is cheering every challenge and there to support all the players

Every squad needs a Luke 09
