i believe the unwashed tyneside masses also call their city the town or something similar.
in fact i think it's a common usage all over the country for people to go into town. i've never heard many people at all say they are going into the city unless it's london, which has a specific area called the city.

You really should, Harry could not accept Sunderland is a City, but eventually came round to the concept of a City status, now off you trot...
