He went to state school, rare for an England batsmen. I hope him and Lawrence in particular make it for that reason.

Away from cricket, after Rafiq lost his baby son in 2017, Lees was the only Yorkshire player who went to the funeral to support him — a clear demonstration that he is his own man and a decent, empathetic human being. This si what I meant about Hameed and Burns.

He might not score more runs, who knows, but we have to try and pick lads who have techniques are repeatable

I really really hate the posts on here, which are said in press too, that we may as well stick with current players as there is nobody else, we have tried them all

you have never tried them all. Blokes who are in the team for 2 or 3 years who average 30 or less should be replaced.

It almost doesnt matter if they do well then fade to a degree, its about refreshing at the same time to get wins. There is an obsession in cricket, that there isnt in any other sport, about every player needing to be a long term investment.

I think in every team sport selectors/managers etc, have to make a judgement call whether a player who is possibly replacing another player is likely to perform better than the player he is replacing.

That’s what they get paid to assess!

You logic seems to suggest that soon as a player goes through a rough trot just try someone else, irrespective of how possible replacements are playing and performing.

That’s is where I disagree.
of course it depends what else and who else is available and playing well, when deciding whether a player should be dropped.

If there is less players in reserve playing well then of course it is less likely current players will be replaced.

That’s just common sense.

Anybody with any really decent form in county cricket gets a shot anyway. The blokes who have been by far the best in county cricket do get the chance you are talking about. They then average 25-30 pkay for a couple of years and do get replaced. See Jennings, Stoneman, Vince, Robson, Lyth, Denly, Roy, Hales, Sibley, Hameed and Burns will no doubt be next. Others will come in and the same will happen. My issue is more what happens to a lot of these players when they get into the England set up. Are they just not good enough? Is the coaching not good enough? Is the difference in quality just too big? I just think what you want to happen already does but we haven’t moved forward in recent years.

I think some you could argue go backwards, but I dont accept this argument in general

There is no way Sibley and Burns went backwards due to coaching in the test side

They have such unorthodox techniques that test bowlers just work out how to get them out after a while.

Someone like Burns plays his way, and refuses to change, thats fine, but it means after a while you will just stop scoring runs

The thing annoys me is that some of them are unwilling to adaprt

Butcher spoke well on it saying how he initially got in the test side playing his own way, did OK, then test bowlers worked him out

So he went back to CC cricket and just developed a technique that would get him runs at test level. A lot of our lads dont do that, they just stick to what they do at CC level.

Good point about Butcher. He only averaged 34 in test cricket but averaged over 40 in his last 4 years which highlights your point.

You can often pick out chunks of test careers and cite decent averages though. Even with the likes of Hick and Ramprakash.

It’s averaging 40-45 whilst taking into account a learning curve at the start and a tail off at the end that you need. Plenty will do that during some sort of hot patch.

Aye Ramps averaged 40 against the Australian attack that was one of the best ever but was still a big failure in test cricket overall

TBF Sibley is doing exactly this. He missed the Lions tour to remodel his technique.

He has yeah and making good progress I heard

A few I’ve talked to think he will be back in the side this summer

I rate him I think he has the temperament

I said at the time I wouldn’t have played him in Asia, but I think he can play quick bowling

Him n Crawley were a nice mix in South Africa

Now Covid is settling down I think a few players will improve personally

Good. I thought Sibley as things stood had been completely found out as a test match player. A player who couldn't hurt you, couldn't score if you bowled straight with a leg side field and would always eventually get out due to his bat coming down for such an angle. However no-one should be defined by their past and always have the capacity to improve and there is one opening place up for grabs for the first person who takes it whether its him or someone else.
