Was unreal when he first signed before the first big injury. Was always a solid player for us and helped keep us in the prem for a good amount of seasons. When he scored (which was very rare) they were always screamers as well.

He was absolutely immense in thd League Cup final against City at Wembley until he ran out of gas, best player on the pitch. I think at one point he was close to an England call up.

He was definitely close. I always felt his passing range was criminally underrated too. Never got the credit for being technically a decent footballer too.

He was very good when he first signed and was excellent under Poyet in the midfield base role, it was just idiocy to give him that huge contract when he was already showing signs of slowing down and there wasn't particularly a risk of losing out on a big fee if he left. Part of a string of decisions which nearly finished the club off.

Chief Executive gives unusual 6 year contract to player, then quits, then becomes his agent then comes out with the infamous "he won't leave a penny behind quote" while he sits and says nowt and is still getting paid even after leaving us. Just never sat right with me.
