Keel Crossing [opened 18.10.25] - compendium thread

Clearly there are some posters who have had some involvement in the process and they’ve reacted badly to being challenged. It happens.

Personally, I think the rate of progress has been poor and that’ll be down to a mixture of poor procurement and poor practice.

I’m usually in board meetings giving directions to the project team.
Let’s be honest you probably know Jack shit in what’s involved in this type of project.

Making yourself look stupid on this thread if I’m being honest

When I get told a project should be done by 2024, I kind of expect that to happen. It's looking like 2026 now

In the document that said 2024 completion , did it also have a projected start date ?

I'm pretty sure back in in 2020 when that document was produced that the design hadnt been finalised and the contact hadnt been awarded yet. Probably only just had funding confirmed at that point

They shouldn't pick completion times out their arses then

Where’s this 2026 horseshit from ?

You can’t think of why there may have been slippage or delays from a document posted before a certain thing occurred around 2020/21 🤷‍♂️

Have you seen the construction programme ?

Because if you haven't , you can't possibly comment on how well the project is progressing
That’s the same point you made 15 minutes ago.

Local authorities (and I’m not just singling out Sunderland Council) are, in my experience, terrible at procurement and cost and project management. They operate at their own pace, because they don’t have commercial imperatives which drive organisations in other sectors. Private sector contractors generally love doing work for them, because they know that there’ll be minimal pressure from the client.

That translates into projects drifting on for far longer than they might otherwise have done.

Or, as a minimum, for those involved to publicly explain why the 2024 target was missed.

They should come out on camera and bow like in japan to apologise. Get them on look north

That's all well and good but you have zero evidence that is true on this project. Now , I'm not saying it's not. I'm not saying it is . I'm saying i don't know because I don't have access to information to prove it either way

And neither do you

But you are claiming to know, as a fact , that they are dragging thier heels and aren't progressing as quickly as they should be

And I'm pointing out that unless you can actually provide evidence of that , then you are making up a load of bollocks

I haven’t claimed that anyone ‘is dragging their heels’. I’ve questioned the rate of progress and been personally abused and told to ignore the visible facts.

I see that the architects still expect the bridge to have been open for nearly a year by now.

That suggests to me that something has gone badly wrong with the project and all I’ve done is try to ask what that was.

Exactly, it’s a new bridge so it’s not like it’s been causing an inconvenience to anyone by opening late. I’m just glad that’s it’s actually being built and making a massive improvement to the city centre. Don’t mind waiting a while, be worth it in the end.
Must be some folk walk over the Wearmouth Bridge on a matchday glancing over to their left absolutely seething.
. Thats could be anyone posting that, and means nothing.

Nearly £30k on a temporary surface for one day?!

The Councik keep smugly saying ‘it will be finished on budget and on time’ but won’t say what ‘on time’ specifically means.

The phrase also means nothing good if the timetable and budget aren’t challenging.

Thought exercise: imagine the bridge hadn't opened for the rugby, and everyone knew it was scheduled to open at some point a few months later. Then the local opposition councillors find out that it could have been available for Sunderland's big day in the spotlight for less than £30K. Does anyone imagine they wouldn't have been arguing exactly the opposite of what they're arguing now?

Typo, they mean 2035
Even if hypothetically it was a bit behind, does it matter? Most construction projects seem to, the A1 roadworks have been going on about 20 years. Unlike this beneficial new bridge, they actually are an inconvenience as well. The bridge is just sat there minding its own business ready to open for us.
