Keel Crossing [opened 18.10.25] - compendium thread


I might be jumping to conclusions here, but I presume the bridge has been designed by qualified engineers who know they're doing.

Even after that they'll have fed it into computer modelling software to see how much stress it can take before it breaks.

The bridge will be more than strong enough with strength to spare.
But can it cope the fat geordie sumo's that put a foot onto it.
 
It's like the 17th century on here sometimes. Do they still wear tricorn hats round your way and hoy piss and shit out the windows?
Treatments such as lobotomy and electro-convulsive therapy were the order of the day in the 17C. I think we have moved on. At least I hope we have.

I think we all agree that the bridge looks fantastic and will definitely help to get supporters from the town to the SoL.
However I have a question about when supporters are leaving SoL after the game , cross the bridge and then meet the dual carriageway and the pelican crossing to get into Keel Square. Surely given the numbers this is bound to form a bottleneck.
I think one of the original ideas was for a large pedestrian underpass to go under the road, I assume this didn't happen because of the cost.
What's going to be the solution?
Do they close the road for say 30 minutes after each game?
I know, I know, but it's a daft thought that just popped into my head and I thought it was worth asking the question.

It's no different to when people get to the end of wearmouth bridge and have to cross the road

Hope you're right.
However I have seen numerous incidents of people totally ignoring traffic, near misses etc.at the end of Wearmouth bridge and had hoped for something better. Time will tell I suppose it was just a Saturday morning musing on my part.

They were doing lobotomies well into the 1970's in yank land and i doubt they knew much about electricity in the 17c to apply it to the bonce! ECT is still practiced today as a hail mary in severe Depression!

Not sure you’d get an underpass under st Mary Boulevard as either sr Mary’s boulevard would have to be elevated or keel square lowered and you’d end up with a massive ramp to get back up to the levels on HSW.

That crossing is a double one , easily twice the size of the crossings at the ends of the bridge. It’s also got much more space for people to wait for the lights to change unlike the other crossings.
It’s going to make the walk back over to the town so much better

Only if people stop trying to read their phones when they are crossing the bridge.

That may be another reason why it didn't go ahead.
 
I have been thinking looking from afar that the railings were going to be low.
However looking at that picture they are a lot higher than wearmouth bridge.
I thought the width would be narrow from afar, but actually on the bridge with someone standing there it looks massive and as you said the railing aswell
