Keel Crossing [opened 18.10.25] - compendium thread

They could've said to anyone in the world, what should we call this bridge it's crosses the river Wear, and they'd have said errr 'Wear Croosing'...ffs what a name. It should have been the Bradley Bridge. What a missed opportunity to do something great.

Now the name is pretty certain to be Keel Crossing (Keel Bridge to me) and linked to ships they could make it interesting by installing some large art work / structures at either end of the bridge.

Make it feel like walking through the belly of a large ship on the approach to the bridge.

They can give it any name they want, but It’ll always be called ‘The Footbridge’, because that’s what it is. Does anyone on here actually refer to the rail bridge as ‘The Harrison Rail Bridge’ or ‘The Monkwearmouth Rail Bridge’.

Can you imagine the carry on if there was a Sunderland Echo Facebook page back in them days!

VolkerStevin and Sunderland City Council would like to inform you that essential preparatory works will be carried out on the New Wear Footbridge to prepare the bridge deck for waterproofing which will protect it from water infiltration and corrosion.

The works will commence on Monday 2 June 2025 and will take place between 4pm and 10pm for a one-week period.

During the works there are likely to be increased noise and lighting levels which may cause some disruption to our neighbours.

We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience this may cause and assure you that every effort will be made to minimise any impact.

We appreciate your patience and understanding but should you have any questions or concerns regarding the above works, please contact Olivia Murray at [email protected]

Will it be open should we be at home on the opening weekend?

Or is the plan for it's first use to be the rugby?

There's no set opening date but but the council are planning to make a big celebration of it for that rugby game, so presumably would be open at least a week prior? Everything seems to be on track from what I can tell so we must be close to an announcement on a date.

I Imagine it will be open as soon as possible and if we are home , just say a Friday night on sky.. No way the council won't do everything to get it open that weekend
