Keel Crossing [opened 18.10.25] - compendium thread

When they open it they should get that tightrope walking gadgy back from when the Tall Ships was on and get him to walk a rope from the top of Wearmouth Bridge to the new one, over the river.

Failing that, let Dave the Rave do it.

The deck panel placement has started on the New Wear Footbridge 👍🏼

91 panels in total will be used to form the bridge deck.

The 10m wide precast concrete deck panels will be installed north to south using a bespoke trolley system which is designed specifically for its use on the New Wear Footbridge 🌉

A panel is craned from the park to the deck trolley which then transports the panel along the deck and places it to its precise position on the bridge. Then returns for the next panel. Each panel will be ‘stitched’ to its neighbour.

Once all panels are stitched together the remaining deck finishes can commence.

The footbridge, a key part of Riverside Sunderland and one of more than £1bn of development projects live on the Riverside site right now, connecting the north and south side of the river.

I'm not normally scared of heights. Hell I've jumped out of a mini with wings at Shotton Airport but that scares me

NEW BRIDGE NAME
BY MARK METCALFE
Let’s name the New Wear Footbridge after SAFC founder James Allan because its opening will connect the SAFC of today to the spot where it was formed.
When the 250m New Wear Footbridge opens later this year it will help create a smooth and safe connection for pedestrian traffic from the city centre to the Stadium of Light and will eventually bring together Sunderland's Sheepfolds area with Keel Square in the city centre.
Hopes are that the £30m+ structure will help spur thousands of new jobs and homes over the next decade and during which Sunderland AFC will celebrate its 150th anniversary.
With this mind then is it not time that the founder of the club James Allan was publicly recognised in the City and so why not name the new bridge after him?
The location of the bridge is also perfect to name it after Allan, who became SAFC secretary, because it is as close as can be to the former Rectory Park Schools.
Today’s ISIS pub would have been directly across from Rectory Park School, just a few hundred yards from where the new bridge will start on the south side. As such the new bridge will connect today’s club with its original history and for that we have James Allan to thank.

I still think the best choice is Keel Line Bridge - it will very obviously and visibly be a direct continuation of the Keel Line already spanning Keel Square, so will add cohesion to that concept and reinforce the link to our shipbuilding heritage.
