They did tell him to his face, mind. He was told by at least one of the squad on tour that players felt they were walking on eggshells around him. He tried to pass it off as accepting feedback but you could see in his face and body language he was seething.

Him and Adam Gilchrist had a bit of a falling out during the 2005 Ashes too, so it seems that it's not only present day players who didn't appreciate how he went about his business.
