He should have stayed as the opener. End of.
Doesn't have the footwork to be an opener[DOUBLEPOST=1388742224][/DOUBLEPOST]
I posted last year that Joe Root should possibly be dropped down the England batting order to help him and the team.
One of the replies was "are you on glue"? I wasn't then and still haven't tired it - but I think the selectors may have not a sniff or two today.

This[DOUBLEPOST=1388742321][/DOUBLEPOST]
Root should never been dropped it is clear he has a bright future, just one more example of the selectors rubbish thinking
The one who shouldn't have been dropped for me is Prior but that's immaterial now. The whole tour has been a shambles and virtually no-one can really say they deserve to retain their place in the side on merit.

Root has bags of talent. I wouldn't judge him on this series where none of the coaches or the senior batsmen has shown any sort of example or leadership qualities.[DOUBLEPOST=1388733886][/DOUBLEPOST]
This. Flower and the selectors have some serious thinking to do when they get back from this shambolic tour. Too many players have been in a comfort zone and un droppable and the lack of succession planning sees England caught with their trousers down.
To be fair, in the last few years they've blooded Root, Bairstow and Taylor with an eye to them replacing the likes of KP and Bell in the next couple of years. Sadly they just haven't been up to it yet. And it might look slightly like a bit of a panic when they threw Stokes in but they picked him to go on this tour.

tbf, it seems farcical at this point that we can complain about lack of preperation for the future at the same time as the work load our players have to deal with and exhaustion.

every now and then leave a player out for a tour and blood a new comer. it may save us from a few situations like the kp retirement fiasco or trott's problems whilst also giving us an opportunity to see what the likes of stokes, bairstow, borthwick etc are like outside of the pressure cooker of 0-4 ashes cricket

There was a stat in the last test, I think it was Stokes century being the first century by an England number whatever in 32 Tests going back to September 2011.

What shocked me about that was that we'd played 32 Test matches in little over 2 years

Think we suffer because we're the only Northern hemisphere country apart from the Windies so we play all year around every year and also the ECB's determination to not let test cricket die.

yeah i thought the same thing. i thought it was 24 tests in 18 months though, maybe it was 32 tests in 24 months, whatever the case, it is ridiculous like[DOUBLEPOST=1388778927][/DOUBLEPOST]

what i dont understand, and i've posted this on here somewhere before, is why do we always seem to not bring any players in until we are desperate for them and at the same time all of our players are knackered from being over played?

surely it would be reasonably simple to give the players the occasional tour off and give some fringe players a chance to acclimatise...

Another Mark Lathwell?

f***ing hell - Flintoff over Kallis and now this? Lathwell was scared shitless, didn't even want to play and barely made a run (one thirty perhaps). This lad already has test match hundreds and a massive Ashes hundred under his belt and he's just a kid.

I read Alastair Cook has told him "go back to your county and make some runs". In fact the same thing he and flower said to Compton.

Amazing if true (pot/kettle etc)

fairly sure they both have higher averages than he does over the last year or two. still, what else can you say? picking carberry over either of them two was criminal, let alone both.
