Joe Root - The Captain

Yeah I can say what you saying, but when you look at the games we winning with all respect to Root, don’t think he has influenced them results was the victory in South Africa to do with him or the players. The Ashes victories in last summer especially one of them was down to the players rather than the captain

I think that is ridiculously unfair, and simply untrue

He had a massive influence in South Africa

You are also totally dismissing the fact that players have all bought into what he is doing, and would run through walls for him

You seem fixed on this funky Mike B tactical genius, thats not what captaincy is about.

Sorry but to say he doesnt influence games as captain is simply untrue
I've always found England Captains to play safe far too much, assume out of fear of being ragged by the tabloids if they make daring aggressive decisions that don't turn out well.
In contrast I love Morgan's captaincy in the short formats "He who dares Rodney".

Root isn't defensive like, he sets some aggressive declarations that cost him the odd game
I think you're spot on about Root and Cook never looking like "natural captains". But I guess that's the problem with the modern game in England - our best players never get the chance to captain for their county before being given the top job.

Stokes did well as stand in but we can't overburdened him; Burns is an excellent skipper at County level (yeah yeah, Surrey bias etc) but needs to cement his place in the side

So Root doesnt look a captain, but Stokes did despite cocking up selection and the toss and getting beat by the west indies

Root then wins the next 3 games, but aye doesnt look a captain
That's kinda what I was getting at though, Root hasn't been blessed with that great of an England side (from a batting perspective anyway). Our top order has been a mess since Root came in as captain. We've consistently been 50-3.

Yet we still win a lot of games, he has done very well

I really think England fans on here just take things for granted, we win a lot of games and nobody seems to get any credit for it.

Somehow people have been convinced that the only thing that matters is Australia away, it isn't

Australia haven't won in England for over 20 years for example

Think you have misunderstood my point mate, I was not getting at or criticising Root in the slightest,

I am not fixed on Mike B tactical genius in the slightest, the exact opposite in fact.

I was making the point that I think captaincy in most sports is overplayed, in the sense that I think they can only influence soo much if you don’t have the players.

For example you will have poor captains who actually when more games than good captains, because the players they have in their team are better.

Like I said earlier captain can influence slightly but good players win your games.

For example the two best teams in history are Australia and West Indies and it was not because they had the best captains it was because they had the best players!

He's better than Cook IMHO. Joe is imaginative and highly proactive in comparison.

People twist about his captaincy because it has ruined his outstanding batting not because it's especially bad.

Looking at this list I’m very surprised the number of tests captained by Cook, Strauss, Atherton and Gooch.....thought they had way more under their belts
