Jobe Bellingham - Signed

The only reason we aren't starting in a 4231 is because of the injury situation.

If everyone was fit, we'd likely play...

Patto
Hume Ballard Batth Cirkin
Evans Neil
Roberts Amad Clarke
Stewart
And that is a cast iron fact.

I'd argue 4231 is a derivative of 433. It's the same thing.
Whilst I'd certainly agree with that view under Mowbray, I'd be less inclined to agree that it would have been that way under Neil. We'd have probably played 3-5-2 a lot, would have run the risk of marginalising Roberts and Amad and would have had to put up with a load of moaning every single press conference (although that would have been a different matter).

If he didn’t play a certain way and changed how he operated, he wouldn’t fit what the club want anymore and would be replaced. It’s as simple as that. Whilst there mightn’t be a contractual line which says play 4231 or else, there is a clear expectation that his formation and style suits what Speakman has mandated the club chases. Sure there’s room to adapt on a case by case basis, but yes he obviously has a mandate to do certain things, as does every other manager in the country. No one is just given total free reign to crack on as they like in any job ever

There’s this key word in the sentence called “if” - it’s a conditional term. Perhaps you need to google it.

I think you are massively underplaying it tbh. There will be a clear mandate laid out for him to operate from, including style and things. How else can a DOF type system operate without a fixed formation to baseline from? How does he even know how many CBs to sign if he doesn’t know whether we want to play 3 or 4 at the back? How does he know whether to sign proper wingers if we’re playing a traditional 352 for instance?

There won’t be a cast iron you must be 4231 every single game, but there will be an expectation that selection revolves around a 4231, playing a passing, counter attacking style with a high press or whatever the finer details they’ve focus on are. Otherwise the DOF approach cannot begin to operate successfully
The style of play is implemented from top to bottom at all levels so when the players come through they are familiar with it the players are signed to fit into the system.

Do you or do you not think Tony Mowbray has done a fantastic job with a young side ravaged with injuries in key positions. Out of 10 how highly would you rate his performance?

How highly do you now rate Anthony Patterson after you used to slate him week in, week out?

Again. You need to make your mind up.

Mowbray is an idiot and shouldn’t have ever been appointed at this club tbh. We need a young and progressive manager who adopts things like sports science and buys into the data driven approach on the field to supplement this approach to our signings. No point in signing players that suit a certain directive if our manager doesn’t play towards said directive

its the other way around..they scanned a database of 10,000 managers to find one whose preferred style aligns with SAFCs..now that style can be deployed in numerous formations (its a good job its not a contractual obligation to play 4-2-3-1 because, well he hasnt really played it for a long time) because formation is a second order factor, behind the guiding principals of how they want to play..ie with young players...playing out from the back etc

I’d prefer us to adapt once we go up. Which we will. We’ll go from being one of the better teams to one of the worst in the league by definition and we have to adapt. That’s what this thread is about - a signing for next season and how he may fit into the side. And being a PL side is a distinct possibility. We would naturally need to shore up the team somewhat and going 433 instead of 4231 is a key way of doing that. Hence the discussion. No idea where you got Mowbray from in all of that

We shouldn't adapt our way of playing and change it completely. There's teams in that league we'd compete with playing like we do.. You'd adapt against the obvious teams, the top teams of the league

Wasn't he here earlier in the season, I'm not sure which game it was mind?

He was for the Birmingham game

I wouldn't. I'd just try and see what happens. If we get beat at least do it trying to play entertaining football

Travelling Mackem reminds me of a poster called Premiership who came out with the immortal “Andover is overseas” post

despite using that name , he never did post when we were actually in the premier league. His glory was around the season after the 15 point relegation under Keane
