I believe this squad should be performing better than it is.

He's signed Wyke...what for? If anything he makes us worse.

It’s a strange one but his ‘record’ at this level is pretty good. Even Grayson (iirc) got good performances from him, why the lack of it here? Fair enough he’s been hard done by in injuries but we are in League 1, playing teams that we would normally test for fitness with the likes of Kirchoff in the checkatrade trophy when we were to field an U21/U23 team. On the grand scheme of things not big money, but considering the level we are at it is. Should be winning more, I’ll hold my hands up as I said we would run away with it at the turn of the year, but hasn’t happened, yet.

You have downplayed things a little.
There was a big upheaval in the squad and little money to play with as lawrie mac had virtually bankrupted us.
Smith made some clever signings for next to nowt, brought in young uns like Owers and after a, stuttering first few games, away we went playing good attractive football and scoring goals a plenty.
Ross still doesn't know his best 11, the football is turgid and he seems to have abandoned his St Mirren principles for some unknown reason.
Fwiw, I think he has done a fairly good job so far given the summer upheaval, and it won't take much to get us top 2, but ffs, let's have some up tempo football with movement, pace and decent passing.
We have a pedestrian central midfield that lacks pace, drive, initiative, guile, strength and height. This is why we spend so much time attacking down the wings. Honeyman addressed these shortcomings, sufficiently, to give us some presence in CM, but, without him, whatever permutation of Power, Cattermole, McGeouch, Mumba, Maguire or O'Nien we deploy centrally, we struggle to compete. The one shining light in this is that Mumba is about twelve and will become an excellent CM in a couple of years. If we can't find a suitable, robust CM on our budget, it may be worth looking at playing one of the defenders in a CM role, to get some semblance of height and physicality into the centre of the park.

Jack Ross took over at St Mirren in October 2016 when they had drawn 4 and lost 4 of their first 8 league games. His league results for that season were as follows:

LLLLLLWWDLDLDLDWWLDWWWDWDLWD

He lost his first 6 games but you can see how he gradually turned them around to keep them up.

2017/18 League results:

WLWWWLWWWDDLWWLWWWWDWWWWLWWWWDWLDLWL

Not the strongest finish to win the league but he did win 12 out of 14 at one stage.

I think we need to stick with Jack next season even if we don’t get promotion in May.

January transfer business now looks like it's coming back to bite - wrong players for a decent wedge . against any pace or power we crumble. God help us in the play offs

problem is. even anyone with half a clue about football has witnessed this for 4 years now. not one manager has sorted it .. not one
