Of course you can. Whenever they had a good chance to score, our defence or keeper was equal to it and prevented it. The only time they got the ball in the net was from an unsavable shot that would have been a goal against any keeper in the country, let alone League 1.

Of course it isn't. Our goal was fairly standard. We scored because our strategy of tiring them out worked, not because it was a particularly amazing strike.

I am. It's the same gameplan we've used numerous times since it became obvious that every team in the division comes racing out of the starting blocks treating us like a cup final.

In theory it's a good strategy. I'm yet to hear a better gameplan from anyone bitching about Ross being "clueless".

Such is football. Last season a good keeper and a good striker could have made the difference between us staying up and being relegated. We didn't have them, we went down. This year we have them (relative to the rest of the division) and we're almost at the top of the table.

A point away from home against a team in the same division is rarely too bad a result. Nothing to do with thinking the opposition is better than you. We're everyone's cup final this season. Everyone's raising their game against us and most are losing their very next game after playing us due to being spent. It would be ludicrous to expect we could "raise our game" in the same way for every single match we play.

Not that I'm saying Ross is clueless, but our gameplan should be to counter press. Press them high up the field, and play directly when we win the ball back, before the opposition can regroup. That should be our very basis, which covers out of possession, in transition and in possession.

When we have the ball deep, we should be more patient. Play the ball around a bit more and invite the opposition onto us. When they commit, we hit them quickly and directly. Exactly as some of the better teams in the league have done to us. Too many times this season we've done it the wrong way round.

I think our shape/formation has been mostly fine.

I'm not blaming the gk or defence for today because I haven't seen the goal but to me our play has gone down hill since we lost a coach to Ipswich.
We haven't played the same imo.

It’s the f***ing players man, why do some turn so quickly on managers on here yet most let the players off Scott free. I’m sure Ross says reet lads don’t have many shots, pass to the other team, hit the first man with every set piece etc have a f***ing word with yersells man.

As you saw with Mourinho it can be down to the manager and not the players. I don't see any attitude problems from the players...they just don't seem to know what to do.

Teams have sussed us out and know how to play against us. We don’t have the ability or knowledge to go through the gears. Difficult to see how this will pan out

His signings have really improved us ffs, players, players it his job to get them performing at their best he hasn’t

Yet again this placed is getting carried away
Carried away indeed, some are saying Ross is clueless, Ross out, blah blah blah, He has only been in the job for 6 months, his team are third in the league , unbeaten at home. We went a whole year WITHOUT a win at home not long ago.
Be careful what you wish for, or try and be sensible. We are a third tier club, but heading upwards, it takes time.

As far as I saw today, the strategy you're describing is exactly what we do.

Our defensive players allow opposition attackers to get close before passing it between them and the keeper to make the opposition run their arses off and tire them out while stretching the field of play to give our attacking players more space, and then we hit them with a direct ball.

When play is squeezed up at their end of the field we press them to try and get it back, then if there isn't space for an instant counter when we do get the ball we bring it back to a deeper position to create more space up front again so that we can try to hit them quickly in the space we've created.

It doesn't always work but I'm convinced that what you describe is the plan we have.

We haven't been doing it for a while though, unfortunately. We have people like Maguire or McGeouch (who I have no problem with generally) doing the wrong thing at the wrong time; they go backwards and allow the opposition to regroup. Then our centre backs play the long diagonal ball at the wrong time.

I think this was our gameplan earlier in the season. I'm not sure at the moment.

I think Maguire is a bit of a "luxury" player. I don't think he's great at the pressing game or finding space for the direct ball, but when he does find a bit of space near the box his long-range shots are better than anyone else's in the squad.

His one chance today he blazed over the bar but that's a rarity for him to be fair. Usually from that range he's been getting them on target more often than not and scoring some amazing goals. Scunthorpe just did well today to nullify that threat more than some other teams we've played have.

I would certainly keep him in the first team for his ability to get those goals out of nowhere on occasion though. I just think we need to work on finding him the space to do so.

Maguire works hard and tracks back so he wouldn't be what I classify as a luxury player. McGeady would fit the bill more, but he's our best player. Maguire's a good instinctive player but he runs down blind alleys when he has time to think. I never have much of a problem with people shooting at a given opportunity.

The reason we conceded today was down to 1st Power and 2nd Wyke both putting in half arsed chicken shit challenges prior to the lad getting his shot off......PISS POOR the pair of them.
