No, by my method we would have been the only people providing an offer to him as Ipswich would not have earned the right to provide him with an offer because they wouldn’t have matched our reasonable valuation.

£30m for a player of Clarks quality in this market is totally reasonable, and if nobody wants to play it then he remains our player.

We weren’t selling him on an auction, we don’t have to accept the highest bid for him.
 
There has been a massive overreaction on here but its understandable when your best player leaves I suppose. I have had plenty of issues with the club over the last year but no issue at all over this and no issue with Clarke who i hope has a good career and makes the step up.

The reality is that most Sunderland supporters value Clarke a fair bit higher at least 20 + 5 but the bottom line is nobody else does. Every premiership club will be fully aware of Clarke's skill set and loads of clubs abroad as well and any one of them could have had Clarke for 25 million at any stage but none of them value him that highly. If we kept him another year he would either be disgruntled and not perform as well but even if he continued to perform its clear there something that top division clubs don't see in him. If top division clubs don't value him now then in what situation would they value him in a years time with one year left on his contract? He can hardly perform any better than he already has.
If Clarke has pushed for a move to a top flight side I cant see any alternative other than to get the best deal we can 20 mill plus sell on and try to build a team that doesn't have to rely as much on one player. I think this manager will make a good job of doing that.

We don't have to, no, but if he wants to go and tells us as much we're not doing ourselves any favours by forcing him to stay. You do that then the player's unhappy, his value in later windows drops, and you deter potential signings from joining if they think the club's going to prevent them from advancing their career if they do well. Best outcome for all parties then is to just make the best deal you can.

£30 million 😐 You’d just buy a premier league proven Winger for that. Clark is 22 years old with no premier league stats, he’s a considerable risk even at 15 million

Did he say that like? There isn't any evidence of him being anything other than totally professional and committed.

Good point - when it became gen knowledge that Clarke was up for grabs around the £20m mark - no one gazumped Ipswich
 
Hopefully they invest the money wisely and strengthen the side! We have shown you can get good players for next to nothing!
