Is Boro a derby?

It's slightly more of a rivalry than most other games we play (as is Leeds though imo), but I can't in all honesty call it a derby.

We've had so many players cross that divide with ease that I've often wanted them to do well.

That's a good point. Would Grant Leadbitter have signed for Newcastle and be as appreciated by Sunderland fans

As you say, Boro is a small town in Yorkshire.
If you ignore the extra bits added to Sunderland ie Washington etc to make it a city, and the 40k or so lopped off Boro and given to Redcar and cleveland (for some reason) the two places are pretty much the same size. So if we are a small town in Yorkshire you are a small town in Durham. For me being a Boro fan it's the game I most like to win, I don't loose sleep over it though and Leeds come very close in second place. I don't really give to hoots about the maggots.

Gary Rowell, Boro loaned Sunderland their best prospect Stuart Downing, the list is endless the players that have passed between the clubs, Boro legend Mogga.
its nowhere near the level of hatred that Newcastle and Sunderland have..
but there was a lot more trouble between the supporters in 80s.
that stemmed from the fact that Around 10k Sunderland fans used to turn up and cause havoc.

Think there is a very easy way to put this into perspective.

If the mutants beat us then I am obviously dissapointed as we have lost a game whereas when the filth beat us (albeit not nowadays as they are now drowning in blood money) I have been absoloutley gutted. Been a long time sinve we were on a level playing field with the stinkers though and for me we still habe the bragging rights so I just don't get that derby feeling from any of our games any more and will probably be a long long time before that feeling returns.

I think if you take Sunderland (the place itself) without the extra added bits that came later (asked to join when making it a city) and Middlesbrough (the bits they put in Redcar that are clearly in Middlesbrough what everyone calls unofficial Middlesbrough) both places are roughly the same size.
