India v England series

It’s not inconceivable they go with Ali ahead of Lawrence imo.

Burns
Sibley
Stokes
Root
Pope
Lawrence
Buttler
Bess
Archer
Leach
Anderson/Broad

That’s the only other alternative I can see, if both play. Could swap Root and Stokes around but can’t see that.

How is that the only alternative

you cant have your 5th bowler batting 3 man!

Stokes will be bowling lots of overs, he cant bat 3 at all

this is literally the last alternative

Whilst I agree Stokes shouldn’t be 3, Kallis did it for 15 years so it’s not like it’s completely unheard of for an all rounder to be at 3.

Kallis batted at 4 not 3 mind, and he was an occasional bowler in his latter days, and a medium pace swing one, not what Stokes will be used as

We physically can't play Stokes there, I've no idea why its even a suggestion, its like saying bat our keeper at , they cant

Its the lack of joined up thinking on when to rest players.
Like YJB said himself, if not now, then when?

Alright man calm down.
I said initially if it’s between Pope and Lawrence I’d go Pope. What other alternative is there? You’ve ruled out Stokes at 3, won’t have Root there and Ali can’t bat anywhere in the top 6 according to you.
maybe we should just play with 10 men and leave the number 3 spot vacant

haha sorry wasn’t trying to have ago

it’s not that complicated for me just play Pope or Lawrence there, why not do that? If they both want to stay in the team after this series one needs to play there anyway.

I don’t get what the confusion is? Can’t play Stokes there though, he could bowl 20 overs then be in 2nd ball!

my instinct actually is that they’ll bat Root 3 and play Ali 7 with Buttler 6

now I really really hope I’m wrong, as you’re messing up your best player, and it’s a big ask for Ali

the only way I saw us winning this series was playing a proper top 6 with a keeper batsman at 7, I fear that they won’t

@chunkylover53 is right above, “mess” is how I’d describe it

we’ve left ourselves in the 1st test of a marquee series scrambling around for a team because of only 1 injury

yet we have 5 or 6 reserve seam bowlers, but only 1 spare batsman

it’s poor planning and a total cock up by Ed Smith

I agree re. Stokes by the way. I wouldn’t have him there at all. Just discussing what they might do.

I think my preference would be Root at 3...but then again I expect Bairstow to be back there for the last two Tests so is there any point in moving Root for two games, just to move him back down again, might be better to leave him settled at 4 for the full series where he obviously wants to be.

Given that, I’d probably go Pope and I think if he is to be the player everyone seems to think he is he really needs to show it if he gets the opportunity.

I’d like to see Ali back in and doing well, but yeah it is a big ask. I’d back him to do well like, but admittedly it’s a gamble.

There are some issues I agree but think it’s harsh to blame Smith tbh. He’s between a rock and a hard place in some ways imo. Which batsmen have we left behind that are crying out for a place? Perhaps we could have taken one more, but who are the obvious candidates? We had to take the bowlers for cover, no problem with that. Does that make it a mess? Not really, for me tbh.

I think we’re in an unusual position where we’ve got quite a lot of strong options in terms of player to pick from yet no obvious solutions to certain selection issues. It’s interesting for sure.

I’m encouraged we seem to be getting some depth to the squad overall and am looking forward to seeing some players we haven’t seen for a while.Genuinely think we’re, quietly, in quite a good place & can’t help but feel we’ve got a good chance out there. Fingers crossed anyhow.

In the summer where you don’t have international quarantine? Or don’t play the IPL the second time

Most have the Indian players have had one week out of the bubbles since the IPL started last summer. They ended up with loads of injuries and fatigue by the end of the Australia tour too. They’re clearly favourites but maybe that will play to our advantage if we don’t get hammered in the first 2 tests
To be fair, if England hit a boundary in a full or empty arena there will still be silence ;).

hoping some casual fans pop on here after checking it out on channel 4 8-)
