He’s played 1 first class game in 1 n half years, deary me man

Sorry that’s embarrassing, needs saying

I would have played Bess by the way but I’m not fickle enough to make an unfair judgement like that
He needs to to turn up with the bat now to justify his selection.

This is just about an average score by their top six. Can we remove the bottom four for less than 100?

Well. he did bowl Kohli like

He doesnt need to justify anything, you cant expect a spin bowler to be on it from day 1 with no first class cricket in a year and a half

I am not an Ali lover, just stating obvious facts. Just the modern way I am afraid.

Spin bowlers need overs, its basic cricket.

Perhaps but then he shouldn’t have played, it was a strange selection. Hopefully he contributes with the bat tomorrow

Just think the comments are very harsh, as I say I am not big supporter of him saying he should be in the team, but Bess was struggling, and its just unrealstic to think he'd just turn it on in day one

No spinner in the world would, he still took 2 wickets like.

Its test cricket like, not the Dubai T5 like

It is. But then does that perhaps make it the point that he shouldn't be playing?

Not necessarily disagreeing with you btw, and yes he did bowl Kohli. He's now got an added chance to justify his selection with the bat was more my point, after an overall poor day with the ball (for the reasons you've stated).

Edit: and of course bowl again. See Leach for the example of two innings for that.

Yeah for sure, but thats a separate point though mate.

There is absolutely logic saying he shouldn't play because of that, which is a fair argument, one I probs agree with

I just think if you pick him, don't make massive judgements about him, as it wont be a true reflection of his ability, doesnt matter who he is, Ali, Bess, Leach, Lyon, whoever

For the record, I didn't think he bowled that badly.

Aye. Certainly its not really fair to judge him after one day of a five day test.

Sure it’s been covered but what on earth was kohli playing at? I thought from the replays he was looking dumbfounded at the delivery not questioning if it was out! I do want to like him but it’s hard sometimes.

England have done well not to get drawn in, leach laughing off the DRS controversy by comparing it to VAR for example, but it’s only going to get worse as this match and the series goes on I fear

I disagree with the idea that Moeen is a good spinner. He averages 37 a wicket. His FC record is 38 per wicket. He bowls some great wicket taking balls, but also a load of dross.

Bess is a far, far better bowler. Honestly I think Root is closer to Moeen than Moeen is to Bess. Root's hard to gauge because his bowling has obviously improved but you don't see much of it.

To me the only value Moeen adds in any format is his ability to hit from ball one, I honestly think he's pretty much obsolete for England in Test cricket. You will get a 70 off 30 balls or 30 off 10 occasionally in the T20s or ODis. But to me he's just too much of a liability now in such a strong and consistent side. Moeen's performance today was pretty much bang on what I'd expect from him, India know the pressure will be off when he comes on to bowl - when he's one of your two main spinners in India... not good.

I think they've done well to laugh it off this time, but a different approach will be necessary if (when?) it happens again.

Sorry like thats not fair, the time has a massive imapct, he hasn't bowled in a first class game for a year and a half

He ruled himself out of the NZ and SA red ball tours

Such a frustrating player. Could have been fantastic if he cut out the four ball and found some consistency.
