41 years since we last played in europe... wigan have a better record than that an yet may improve upon it.

in my experience, cup runs have been rare.
opportunities like yesterday (i.e. getting to the latter stages against beatable opposition) are rarer still.
i found the statement i quoted from you earlier post to be odd.
there is no time like the present yet, we have some who are blithely dismissing yesterday as necessary for the notion of premier league greater good.

Its become a spreadsheet obsessed club, one why next years accounts are the only trophy worth fighting for.

Poyet, for the most part, stuck with the players who (just about) beat Southampton.

People forget how lucky we were to get to that stage. Lamberts miss anyone?

We all saw how the team performed with a huge cup game coming up. They didn't turn up against Arsenal. We can't afford to let that happen again.

These days, it seems that dropping into a lower league and returning to the prem immediately is becoming increasingly difficult. I want Sunderland to stay up. Hopefully Poyet can bring us long term, mid table stability and therefore have a proper crack at these cups ties over the next few years.

I'm gutted, like I'm sure we all are, because it was a real chance of Wembley, then maybe a final, Europe, etc etc. We've had a taste of Wembley, and getting pissed up in London for four days (well, I was pissed for four days), and we wanted more. But, cold light of day, he did the right thing - the Premiership is much more important to the club, whether we want to admit it or not. It was a gamble, but he had to take it. Had Cattermole put in performance like he did in the first half at Wembley, then it could have all been completely different (although personally I think his inabilities far outweigh his positives - his passing is woeful). Had Poyet put in players, who went on to pick an injury up, or a suspension, we'd be right (well, further) in the shit.

We need to take yesterday on the chin, and move on. I'm backing Poyet too.
 
Last week it was "I just hope we can keep hold of him" now we need a thread backing him. He's turned things around and the fact we've even got a chance of stopping up is an almost miracle. We're heading in the right direction and we need to stick together regardless of how this season ends. Gus is the man to take us forward I'm certain of it

we were but that event seems to happen what every 20 years

but the seems to be a notion going around, that playing stoke next year is what we are aiming for.

I think the major disagreement here is whether continuing in the cup would have a detrimental effect on our chances of staying in the premiership this season. Poyet seems to have fielded 6 players which some of us feel should have had 1st choice players there instead, and whilst we should be able to rotate our squad a bit and still been competitive, there is no doubt that this made the game more of a gamble. Question is, is this acceptable or not? Keeping calm with each other because we all love the team and want the best from them, how much did the team selection effect the quarter final and our chances of staying up?

I'm in the "love Gus but he fucked up" camp because any time you field anything but your best side you are lengthening the odds, not the certainty, that you will win. I cannot accept that players who are athletes cannot play a game a week competitively, and I also think that you cannot save them for 'more important games' in case of injury or suspension because you'd never play your best players at all. It's two extra games, not three because the final is after the season finishes, but even so they live to play football, how do you keep a player happy if he's being rested on the bench?

I think morale would have been much higher if we'd won, tired legs would feel fresher and the crowd would have been a mighty force against Palace. Our odds of winning would have shrunk, whereas I think they've grown. It was a gamble by Gus in my opinion, but his logic seems flawed to me, he gambled everything on a 2nd string team winning which makes no sense at this stage of the season. To answer my own question I think his team choice worsened our chances of a semi final, and also worsened our chances of staying up.

Mind you, I think it's because the Pillsbury Fuckin Dough Boy got one over on us again that has really got us all wound up.

This. Team morale can't be lower after losing 3 consecutive games with 1-4, 1-3, 0-3, being beaten by Hull 0-6 over 3 games and with one eye looking at the semifinals and thinking about what could have been to take another chance at a trophy.

I just think it's like going into a Wimbledon Quarter final with a racket that has a couple of loose strings. You may still have lost with the proper gear, you may fluke a win with the 2nd rate gear but why not maximise your chances and take your good racket. It comes down to whether you think players can play every week or not I suppose, it really seems like a wasted opportunity to me.

This weekend (and the resultant draw) is a golden opportunity missed. The cups are the only competition we're ever going to be in a chance of winning. But it's plainly obvious that premier league survival is now priority number 1. It's all 'bout the money money money.

I back poyet too. But I'm still pissed off.
