I mean it'd be funny once, maybe twice even, but there's something just inherently funny about farting that has kept society laughing since the dawn of time*

*I can't back this up.

But that's not true of all cultures. I remember reading how some Brits and Russians were sharing a base in the Antarctic and the Russians were outraged because the Brits found farting in public to be hilarious. The Russians were furious with the Brits.

On the other hand there's a story about Elizabeth Ist and how one of her courtiers went in to voluntary exile for five long years because he had farted in the presence of the Queen.
When he summoned up enough courage to return to the court he was immediately recognised by Elizabeth who said "Welcome back my Lord. Fear not we have not forgotten thy fart.".
