ID checks for away tickets

There are 3 options I think.

1. ID checks at random for all fans, maybe only 100 per game but might be enough to put people off chancing it. An inconvenience for everyone really, unless they can have a list at the turnstile to tick your name off instead of traipsing to the ticket office.

2. Exempt the tickets bought by branches, make everyone else have to do the odd random ID check. Bit of a two tier system, not really very fair.

3. Live with the "problem" as it is today. No inconvenience, but likelihood of people being able to build their own points is over. Those of us in phase 1 can dish out the odd ticket to the plebs if we fancy a game or 10 off.

Stoke away for me was the worst. Only just made it back to the M6 in the car the snow was so bad. Then a struggle all the way down the M6 and M1. Horrific. Then the M25 east, managed about 10 miles and then everything came to a standstill. Loads of lorry's couldn't get up a small incline so we were stuck there. 7 hours for less than 150 miles and we had to stay on the M25 overnight. Sat there watching guys build snowmen on the motorway. Mad.

Shared a poe at halftime as planned to stop on the drive home for a bite to eat , got home in Washington about 12.30am absolutely starving.

Half a frigging pie in 17 hours.

All of this winds me up. I've done your Plymouths, Cardiffs, Portsmouths, Bristols, Norwich away mid-week and even burning holidays in week 1 to go to Brentford.

If I wanted to help a mate out on a one off when I can't go, then surely I've put the miles in to do that.

As long as you're not ripping lads off then I don't see the problem with it, would be better if you could transfer the ticket officially like you can with Home games, I'd not have a problem with the person that went getting the point either.

On the odd occasion it should be okay really. But ultimately you doing the long miles etc means you're rightly guaranteed your ticket if you can go. It shouldn't give you any implied right to choose who you want to take that ticket if you can't. If you can't go, there'll be lots of other people who are just outside the cutoff (or in the same phase but didn't get a ticket), who have also done lots of miles, who would be next in line to get the ticket and the point, potentially allowing them to get into phase 1 for future matches. If everyone in phase 1 kept buying tickets even when they can't go, then no one gets into that group. If it's someone doing it once or twice then you could say fair enough. But some will get to the stage where they can't go as often (family, work or whatever) but will deliberately just keep giving their ticket away so they can still guarantee going on the occasions when they can make it

The club will be doing these checks to see how often people give their tickets to mates/ randoms. If it's very few, then they'll probably stop doing the checks because it'll be a ball ache for the club as well. But if they find lots of people are getting in on someone else's ticket then they'll think it's worth addressing because there not what the system is meant for

If that's the case then we kiss goodbye to the branches then
are you condoning the issue of branches not being squeaky clean regarding the issues in this thread. seems odd that you bang on and on about players and sponsors getting tickets but appear to be fine with other people getting tickets they may not deserve.
it's all a bit hypocritical don't you think?
the only way to resolve this is to have 100% id checks, that way you can be sure the tickets are in the right hands.

Surely this has to be the answer?

Just keep the whole thing official and in the Club's hands.

If you want to transfer, you can, via the clubs official platform, but you lose the point and it goes to the account you are transferring too.

That stops the high level points horders, and at the same time ligitamises the transfer of tickets where required.

I think this would be a great idea to bring up at the next supporters meeting.

i get what you're saying but if everyone was allowed to give their tickets away one or two times a season you could end up with thousands of tickets passed on over the season. there should be something whereby tickets can be handed back and put back on sale the day before a game.

as long as the person it's been passed on to has the right amount of points.

I can see what your saying, but it's about perspective for me..

A bloke who runs a branch, putting in endless hours of voluntary time and effort to organise busses, getting 40 tickets of which 10 go to other members of the branch, to me isn't a massive issue. Not ideal, but it keeps the branch going and I'd trust the bloke running the branch to naturally make sure the spare tickets go to people who are deserving ... Probably people who have been in that branch for years, have season tickets already and have been to many many away games over the years. The likelihood of one of those tickets ending up in the "wrong" hands is minimal. They'll end up going to proper sunderland fans

You can't say that about Leo Hjeldes cousins window cleaner getting his hands on a ticket

Or a rich person who has never been to a game in thier lives, paying to jump the queue

Just my opinion. Can see how people may feel differently and that's fine. It's not exactly a controversial stand point. And it's not bulletproof, I can see that
Nobody would want that but if that is what would happen then it feels like this is a bigger issue ie branches facilitating the hoarding of points for their members, than any of us think. Either that or you're exaggerating the impact in the hope that they dont get caught up in the checking

I think branches "hoard" enough points to keep that branch going and the branch will consist entirely of proper sunderland fans. It's not ideal but I don't have a problem with it

i've liked your post because you say it's not bulletproof.

however, in your scenario that means there's possibly 190 tickets going to people who really don't deserve them over a season, replicate that among all the other branches and you can see how people on the lower points are a bit vexed. also, this depends upon your definition of 'deserving'

Exactly.

I'd be happy for the people who run each branch to decide who "deserves" Thier spare tickets. It'll likely be the same pool of people who have been going for years..

I don't think Leo Hjeldes cousin "deserves" one

But each supporter will have their own definition of where that line is

if they've been going for years they wouldn't need to be in a 'pool' this pool suggests to me this 'pool' is made up of those who sacked it off when we were shit and have only recently conveniently rediscovered their passion for away games.
also, how does the person who runs the branch decide who gets the spare tickets? is it his mates, his relatives or someone who pipes them off? it's absolutely not up to anyone else other than the club who gets a ticket and the loyalty point system is named that for a reason.

You do like your extreme examples mind lol The branches only ever ever give the spare tickets to the truly deserving whilsy Leo gives it to the window cleaner and the rich fella who's never been to a match happens to pay a fortune to see one of our games. They all are abusing the system and whilst i'd agree that we can trust the Branch more we've seen enough people on this site quoting how easy its been to get them. Doesn't impact me as I'm usually phase 1 but I may/probably will miss out on Bournemouth. I feel for the guys on the threshold of phase 2 or 3. They're genuine fans too but could miss out because a branch wants to fill a bus? Is it not an option to go with a bus that isn't full and everyone else pays a bit extra. We all have to pay the astronomical cost of transport to away games. Like I said a few last minute issues I've no problem with tickets being passed on at the discretion of the branch. But applying for 25% that aren't going to be used by the points holder just feels too much to me and therefore I'm not surprised that people are unhappy with this

Nope. Afraid not correct. Just cos you've been to a few away games in the past doesn't mean you get to be your mates ticket agent. Buy it, use it, or return it. Random checks the way to go

Option 1 is the way

I personally have no problem with ID checks as I have nothing to hide, always buy and use my own ticket and being a dinosaur still carry my photo driving licence around with me.
I’m not saying they should be introduced as I feel there’s an element of Big Brother about it, I also think that a lot of those advocating it are hypocrites, in fact many saying that they don’t and won’t carry ID with them, bit of an enigma developing here.

So you think it’s ok grouping people who pass on the odd ticket to family/ friends with people who buy tickets for every match, never attend, and sell their tickets on for a big profit.

Not sure many will agree with you.
No one is doing that tho. Show me who is selling their tickets for huge profits.
