Hume Hybrid Role

It was an absolute disaster. Did Hume even know what he was meant to be doing?
 
I thought it worked pretty well against Palace. But that was alongside Xhaka. Hume was awful all round yesterday but I don’t think he was particularly aided by Le Bris’ team selection. Mayenda contributed neither offensively or defensively and it left Hume and Mukiele in a bit of a no-man’s land positionally.

One player, Geertruida, could have added a huge amount from the off yesterday. Why he didn’t start as Xhaka’s replacement is baffling and a little concerning given he now hasn’t featured in the last two games and was playing 21s midweek

Agree with this. He’s a good RB to have as stand in, like Cirkin is at LB. Expecting anything more in the Prem is beyond his ability level today.

If he was at a higher level, you would expect some of the headers or long shot chances he’s had the last few games to at least be on target. But they haven’t, and that’s what separates a good player from a PL starter. Not saying he will never get there but he’s not there today and it was an extreme and unwarranted leap of faith putting him a central midfield holding role today.

Completely disagree with you about Hume in midfield mind. Hume is an honest lad who should either be played at RB or not start at all.
Unfortunately, Mukiele is literally miles better than him in that position and he isn’t going to oust him.
Hume should be on the bench.
 
Someone should tell modern football that a rb should be a rb and not move into strange and exotic places on the football pitch.
 
Hume plays the hybrid role well, and makes us pretty fluid in formation. Today though he was tasked with a more conventional midfield role, holding a position and it didn't work out. He has done very well for us and had a poor game today. There is no need to run him down. He has been great on the whole, is still young and will keep developing.
 
He's had more minutes than the majority of the squad this season and RLB named him Captain today with us sat on 33 points midway through the season.

He's had an off-day along with 5 or 6 others!

Having a decent season and unlucky not to have a couple of goals, we're too conditioned to looking for a fall guy!
 
Let’s not rewrite history on Hume playing a midfield role.

He was excellent last week, he was terrible today and rightly hooked at half time and could and should have been before.

Hume in midfield without Xhaka clearly does not work, we and more importantly RLB now know this.

Today wasn't even a hybrid role, it was him playing flat out midfield, and the lad couldn't do it. Regis wants a good f***ing slap for even contemplating it when there's 2 midfielders on the bench, one 35m and the other 18m.

I love what our gaffer has done this season, but he hung Hume out to dry yesterday, and when it clearly wasn't working, refused to rectify it until it was too late.

Big lessons to be learnt not only for the players, but the head coach himself. He made a right f***ing mess of it.
