How did Sunderland win the Play-Offs

I particularly liked the way @10 Trenches Deep highlighted our overloading of the midfield late on. Both Watson and Roberts were infield ready to intercept, lay off passes and ultimately drive at goal and score. The amount of space that SUFC left in the middle of the park was criminal.

You could also see the complacency in SUFC as extra time approached, where as we upped the ante, players and fans, where as they were blowing hard and became leggy and lazy.

We had to work to get to that point though and it was cautiously done. You saw in the first half how we had lots of ball by could not get Mayenda and Le Fee onto it for the final ball. Blades very effectively shut off ways through the centre. Once we had more security at the back RLB started pushing and tweaking to make more overloads and drag more players out of position to make space in that Sheffield defence. You can see how it all incrementally built up and Mayenda finds space for the first real effort. It's a great example of an attentive, careful coach. No chance Wilder is capable of that kind of in game management.

In mitigation, Anel going off with an injury meant Souza had to drop into the back four which helped create that space in the middle at the crucial moment.

Le Bris out thought Wilder in all three games against the Blades even though we narrowly lost the game at Bramall Lane. I agree with your view that many championship managers are fairly limited tactically (albeit some decent coaches are hampered by the squad they’ve got).

Le Bris will be tested far more next season and he’ll need all the backing he can get in the transfer window to allow him to compete.

Watching the game it is easy to miss all of those little tweaks and not realise just how much influence Le Bris and team are having. As usual your analysis is spot on.

I think we are very fortunate. We have a lots of varied content. Lots of ace podcasts and match vloggers to choose from and having lots different opinions is a good thing.
