I would like many pints of what you're on.

Isn't there an American cargo ship loaded with munitions sunk in the Thames estuary that, if it ever explodes, will take out a huge portion of London?
My Dad (who was a merchant marine gunner) was in Bombay in 1944 when a ship full af ammo (1400 ton) exploded, there were two explosions, the second killed most of the firemen so military staff including Dad went to help. 1300 killed, debris and schrapnel everywhere and the ships propeller landed 12 miles away, still there as a memorial.

f***ing nuts. Know the story of the Hood but hearing about the sheer power involved in the battle such as stuff landing 12 miles away is mental.

Grandad was Navy during the war, I was the only one of his grandkids interested and I blagged his head about it all as a young’n. He had some fascinating stories to tell.

I let him down though hugely by joining the Army!

My Grandda was a Stoker(first class) on Corvettes - convoy escorts, Flower-class - based in Malta for the most part, although he did a few North Atlantic runs.

When we used to mention films we'd seen that had scared us he would tell us not to be daft - he would tell us that the scariest thing is when your ship is searching for u-boats and the outgoing 'ping' returns, indicating a contact. If the sub then decides to go after the escort to make the merchantmen easier pickings, you've not got much chance of getting out if you're down in the engine room.

He was a submariner and spent 90% of his time in the pacific. Can’t remember which harbour it was but they’d slipped through the nets and got detected before they attacked. They attacked still and dodged the bastards who were hunting them on the surface. Said his arse was twitching like a rabbits nose.

Bloke was hard as a coffin nail but an absolute teddybear to us. Lost him not long ago and had the honour of carrying him on.

RE films, remember hiring Das Boot from
Blockbuster and going round his to watch it, said it was shite and a load of bollocks! Ha

My Grandda never missed watching The Cruel Sea - HMS Compass Rose in the film was a fictional Flower-class Corvette and the exterior shots they used were apparently real-life footage of one of his ships.

The Longest Day was his.

None of his family involved but me Nanas Dad and Brothers were. Lost a brother and another lost a hand but her dad and the other brothers came back in one piece. Met some at various things as a nipper but don’t remember as much as ad like.

book wise, Three Corvettes IMO is better than The Cruel Sea

(not that the Cruel Sea is'nt an excellent book)
