When you’re worth more money than most of us can ever dream of (and he could still earn good money in the PL), a bit (or a lot) more doesn’t even matter

I don't think that's true. He's an employee of the state, which is a very different thing. I know a lot of people who wouldn't want to do that (of course a lot would, too)

Strange one about billionaires for me as I reckon I’d pack in working if I ever became rich and spend that untold wealth. I guess it’s probably one of the reasons they’re billionaires and I’m not.

Couldn't pay me enough to live or work in that part of the world personally, would find it a miserable and joyless experience. Each to their own though.
