Harmy

In hindsight if that had happened we would have gone down last year. His captaincy and influence kept us up IMHO.

As for Harmison I'll be surprised if he plays more than a couple of day cricket all season. First day he plays he'll injure himself. Knocking bet.

Still he's gone in September and IIRC Colly is gone the season after.

No doubt Colly turned things around as captain in the second half of last season and he got the team back to playing proper disciplined cricket. But if we had not signed him we could have signed a top overseas player who bats in the top 3 not at 6. Or the other thing that could have happened is Blackwell would not have been frozen out of the side for being a fat lad and would have batted at no6 and been another spin option.

Agree with most things said about Harmy but what about the skipper who is in the studio with him. He seems to have spent the winter travelling the world doing commentary. Then when the squad are about to return for the final months preparation for the new season he requires surgery on an injury. The club has not stated that this is a fresh injury and it looks like they have seen a window 6 weeks before the start of the season to get it sorted.
Colly is also on a massive salary for county cricket and had a very ordinary season last year with the bat and hardly bowls apart from a few overs in one day cricket.

Collingwood has been carrying a hand injury since the last few games of last season and suffered another injury during the winter, and credit to him he carried on in a lot of pain at the end of last season. They haven't been able to operate on his hand during the winter as they have been waiting for the swelling to go down and it's only in the last few weeks they have been able to operate successfully on the injury. It's expected he will be fit and ready for the start of the season. The club stated that it was an injury from last season.

Lets be honest nobody had a good start to the LVCC season for Durham.

Since the captaincy change, I believe the guidance of Collingwood was one of the main reasons we stayed in the division. 114 down at Lancashire, 53 not out at home to Worcester which was one of the best knocks I saw last season from a Durham player and a great partnership of about 80 with Benks. We needed 154 to win and at one stage we were 43-3. 59 in the 2nd innings down at Notts which was our best win of the season. 78 vs Surrey at home, we absolutely hammered them at home. He took plenty of catches as well. He was very vocal in the slips and offered plenty of guidance to the likes of Rushworth last season (who speaks very highly of Collingwood).

I never used to be a big Collingwood fan, I've questioned his committment to Durham in the past but last season I thought he had a good season on what was a tricky batting season at Durham.

I said at the end of last season how impressed I've been with his captaincy skills and I strongly believe Durham are in good hands under his leadership and with Benks alongside him I am happy with those 2 going into the new season which will be a massive test.

He didn't need to bowl much last season, we got the joint highest amount of bowling points last season. Absolutely no need to bowl him for the sake of it, and he was justified in that decision given the excellance of Thorp, Onions and Rushworth (Wood, Stokes & Borthwick when asked).

He's a proper captain and he mixes very well with everyone, unlike Harmison

Totally agree. Should of had the surgery at the end of the season. .

He couldn't

Ok if it was for medical reasons I have no issues what so ever. I also think Collys captaincy along with Benks by his side saved us from relegation. (Wish he could play football & do the same for SAFC) I don't question Collys commitment to DCCC at all. I was over the moon he stayed when Derbyshire came in for him.
Problem has been too many highly paid players with long contracts not performing. Geoff Cook is too frightened they go somewhere else and do well where he would be hammered for not keeping them. To play at this level then they all have the skills required. The master stroke is ensuring they have the right attitude and desire to continue to play. Cook's record in this area is shockingly bad (Harmison, Plunkett & Blackwell) in the last two years clearly show this. These 3 have been massively paid over the last 3 season and only Blackell has played regularly and performed (apart from last season).

Crikey 6 months for the swelling to go down. Footballers rupture their knee ligaments and are able to have the operation within a month after the swelling and bruising has gone. Sorry i maybe wrong but the timing operation sounds all to so that Colly could complete his tv duties first.
By the way i have nothing against Colly and think it is fantastic what he achieved with England, but apart from the promotion season of 2005 i have never seen Colly perform at that level for Durham.
Iam not in the know with anyone at Durham but would love to know why Blacky was frozen out that surely was not just because he was over weight.

The club confirmed it. He suffered a new injury and on top of his injury from end of last season, it fucked all the tissues up.

Blackwell was overweight and other rumours were doing the rounds which have been done to death on here.

WE'll never know the real truth about when he could have had the surgery-important thing is to have him fit for the start of the season. Harker alongside Cook have got to share the blame for giving Harmi,Blacky and Plunkett extended contracts and the sooner both go the better-let's just hope the financial mess is retrievable.
I'd be then happy for Colly, Benks and Killeen to run the show -that'll guarantee 100% commitment or out you go.

Blackwell was certainly overweight when he bowled the Aussies out at the Riverside last season, and when he was our player of the year in 2009 and also at the time he signed his new contract with the club. Yes he had some dips in form at Durham but was always good enough to be one of the first names on the team sheet especially in championship cricket.

Well in with England. Just had a few lads over to South Africa. My lad trains with Annfield Plain every Sunday at Stanley. good setup, but youd expect nothing less with Killeen in charge.

Sound bloke and very well respected coach.

Is he still coaching for Holland?

I'm fairly certain all Neil Killeens time is split between the ECB and Durham now. He's rated as one of the top bowling coaches in the UK and spends a lot of time working with young fast bowlers for the ECB.
It wouldn't surprise me to see him land a head coach job for one of the counties sometime in the future.

The rumour was that he was offered the Hampshire (?) job a year or so back and he turned it down. Happy to stay at Durham.

He's a great lad and Durham through and through, but saying that, he's outgrown his current position as John Windows assistant Academy coach. There may come a time in the near future he has to move to further his career.

I like Geoff Cook, he is a sound bloke, but its hardly a revelation to say that he wont be around forever as first team coach. When he decides to let go of his current position then there will I assume be a shake up and at that point it'll be interesting too see who gets what positions.

John Windows is also a champion bloke BTW.

Neil Killeen should be in charge of the Academy now. Need to move John Windows aside to allow this. Killa has the respect of all the players in the club. He's a winner, played at the top and the sessions he puts on are superb. On top of that he's a nice bloke and a SAFC supporter. In my dealings with him he is totally top notch. In a few years time I can see him being in charge of the cricket side of DCCC.

I'd like to see Benks take over when Cook retires.

I'd like Cook to retire-he's been around too long and familalarity breeds contempt-likewise Harker. WE need both batting, bowling and fielding expertise. Benks,Colly and Killa give you that and they're 100% Durham through and through. Harmi keeps hinting he'd like a coaching position-How conceited can you get?

Speaking of Harker, has anyone been able to explain yet why he resigned as Chief Exec. then suddenly comes back in a minor role?
