Happy Birthday Gary Rowell

Posted about this before but me and my dad were unusually in hospitality for a home game against Burnley around 2004 in the Championship, rather than our regular seats, and we bumped into him on that red carpet staircase in the West Stand. It’s the only time I recall seeing my dad star struck. He stopped him and thanked him for that day and told him he was one of the many in the Leazes End and Gary was almost embarrassed at the hero like adulation but obviously very humble and grateful at the same time. Seemed a great fella. Loved his commentary with Simon Crabtree those years as well.

I was there the day Gary knocked three passed that lot up the road, it's still one of my greatest memories following the lads...

RIP Gary lad you made a young sunderland lad very proud...
Aye

I was 8 and my Man took me to Shields to see Watership Down, we came out and no one knew the score as it was 4:20 ish.

We stopped at Mrs Young’s newsagent opposite the Roker end and she said she thought it was 2-2.

We got home at the other side of the ground to listen to George Bailey on Radio Newcastle. My Mam was ecstatic!

Thank-you Gary and Happy Heavenly Birthday!

Lump in my throat reading that, what a big softie I am 😢

My first hero.

I hope that last sentence is true.

Rowell is remembered by Sunderland supporters for scoring a hat-trick for Sunderland in a 4–1 win away at local rivals on 24 February 1979. Describing the match later, he said "When we hit the 4th I had a chat with about whether to try for a fifth or just to take the piss. We decided to take the piss."

I’m knocking on but it was a bit before my time. If I had a Time Machine I’d definitely make it a priority
