Greek Island thread XIV

For Symi you fly to Rhodes and get a ferry over , was thinking about Symi for this year so I looked into it.
The migrant thing was in 2015 and it was spread across a lot of the islands in the southern Aegean, It has not been an issue since 2015 and to be honest we were on Kos that year and in the resort we were staying in never saw anything

We have stayed in Rethymno and had a lovely holiday, the old town is beautiful and we loved wandering around there of an evening. I wasn’t keen on the beaches as I thought they were a bit crowded with sun beds . One of the best things we did on that holiday was a day out to elafonisi beach , simply stunning!
We’ve also stayed in Elounda which is beautiful and close enough to get into Agios nikolaos for a day or evening .
Sissi, lovely little place and very relaxing and Koutouloufari which is in the hills above Hersonissus.
<< this man knows his gyros and mythos  ... may look into rethymno

Agios Nikolaos is more like a working town than a holiday resort. Lovely place to visit mind. It's got the harbour and then a lake with loads of waterside eateries around. Plenty of eateries, bars, shops etc., in the streets running off. Beautiful place but more expensive than other resorts as has been said.
has it got a beach ?

Have you thought about Skopelos? Into Skiathos and ferry over. Again though main town beach isnt great. But the town is a bit busier than Symi of an evening I would say.

been on a day trip from skiathos town mate , nice place

I really loved Rethymno when I was there. 2004 I think it was. Christ, that long.

Really lovely old town and harbour with beautiful little tavernas. We got 'in with' the owner in one of them and used to spend a couple of hours sat with him and his staff after they finished serving food. Watching the Euros with them on a small crap TV when there was a big screen just around the corner. But it was brilliant.

Hiring a car and exploring up in to the hills is great too. Sitting in little kafe's and tavernas cracking on with old lads who can't speak english. Class man.

I would recommend both by the way.

Both have enough places to eat and drink at night (Symi Town and Slopelos Town - other places very from only a stall to a few bars) to enjoy no matter what you like*.

It's more what you enjoy doing during the day. If you like to hire a car and explore the beaches and the island, or do different beaches each day then Skopelos would be better. If you like to drag your sorry arse out of bed for the 9:30 or 10:30 taxi boat (before the Rhodes day trippers arrive) and be left on a near deserted beach with one taverna all day drinking Mythos and eating freshly caught chargrilled squid, then Symi is better (you can walk to most of the beaches as well).

*I'm not one to make judgement on what you 'like' at night, but fairly sure both would cater for most needs

Worked out in Kos, Corfu, Crete and Santorini as rep. All quality islands. Visited Kefalonia and Zante on hols too.

My first season was Santorini (before it was cool ). Heading back for the first time since I worked there next year for best pals wedding. Can't wait!!

Worked Corfu for 3 years, based in Kavos as a club rep like but the rest of the island is unreal. Locals are class anarl.

@small mythos

my mate ran a cafe/restaurant/bar in sidari for best part of 10 years, did an elvis act enall  .. he even joined the corfu masons , came back about 3-4 year ago when they started upping the taxes on foreign owners

has it got a beach ?

Agios Nikolaos has small coves of beach but they tend to get quite busy. There are better looking bigger beaches around Elounda and Plaka but I was just viewing them from a boat rather than being on them. They're just a short drive north of Agios Nikolaos.

Gouves has some decent bits of beach but again they're several small chunks of beach rather than a big bay. There's a decent sized bit of beach where the water sports are. It's fairly quiet with family taverna style places and small shops. It's not a party resort. It was a fishing village and has a tiny harbour. Had some nice walks along the sea front there. I loved it there but it might be a bit too quiet for some people. It's on the flight path so you get a bit of aircraft noise. I could hear aircraft when I was outside but they were not low enough to bother me. Other people were twisting though. You couldn't hear the planes in bed at night.

There's a cracking beach next to Heraklion but that literally is on the end of the runway. I don't know what that one is called - just noticed it from the bus window!

The south has some cracking beaches. There were posters of them up for day trip visits. Didn't visit any though I'm not sure what the tourist resorts around that area are like.

Skiathos runway is a classic mate

Gibraltar is a good one if you've walked over the border. You have to stroll across the runway, then a red traffic light goes on and a bloke in a high viz vest starts yelling at people to get a move on because there's a plane coming in :lol:

I like the look of Symi
Was there last year for three weeks and had a great time. Now going back in 2019. Symi Town suffered badly due to flash floods late 2017, but following various blogs the repairs have been done, so the tourist season won't suffer. The daily influx of day visitors can be a pain if you stay in Symi during the day, though there's plenty of quiet harbours just a water taxi away.

Elounda in Crete fits the bill...........

we stayed here

Google Maps

It is very difficult to recommend a a holiday destination, when you don't know the person and what are their likes or dislikes.

we enjoyed elounda but we are not drinkers for the bars or nightlife. More interested in a nice taverna for evening meal and a couple of glasses of wine back at the studio.

elounda handy for the island and also getting the bus to agios nikalous, which was nice to wander around.

we also stopped near rethimno about 15 minute bus ride away. our studio apartment faced right onto the med sea and we had a perfect view of people doing surfing paragliding etc.

I would go back again to either of those

The youtube video is from the fishing village near where we stayed which seemed a bit more geared for tourists whereas Rethymno had the feel of a regional town. Commercialised and lively it wasn't but it suited us. It was also ridiculously cheap. A fair few similar places seem to have videos on youtube.

I've been to Hersonissos on Crete and really liked it - would def recommend. The main strip (if ya wanna call it that) is on the harbour and you can sit on the beach all night drinking and eating free crisps. Some crackin' places for bait, and Koutouloufari is just a small walk up the hill for a more traditional change of scenery. I was tempted to go back this year but the Tuesday flights didn't fit in with what holidays I have left.

My favourite Chris

Just got back from Argassi in Zante and have to say it’s my favourite place out of all the places I’ve visited in Greece. Couple of miles away from Zante town if you want to visit, a ton of restaurants to choose from and we didn’t have a bad meal. Right on the sea and plenty to do, great place for families.

Loved Elounda when we went 2 year ago(boat trip to the old leper colony on Spinalonga is always popular)
Rethymno was canny too

figure we would go late in the season hoping to avoid most of the cruises coming in.
