Greek Island Holiday Help

Not bragging but been to Crete in June, Corfu in August and currently in Zante.
12e for a cocktail, 4.50-6 for a pint and 7-9e for something like martini & lemonade.
Pretty standard accross the islands unless way off beaten track.Paid 45e last night for 2 pizas and pint and half.
Last year in Skiathos we paid slightly more.
Greece is getting more and more expensive.
Thanks for that mate , I was going to try some small quiet coastal resorts in Crete . Is that possible ?

Yes. Crete can still be cheap if out of the main resorts. We stayed near Panormos and it was silly cheap in 2018 and that is still the case as a mate was over there earlier this year.

We will fly to Chania , thinking car hire and about 18 days . Any decent mountain resorts ?
Don’t want to see loads of tourists, I see them all year round these days 🫣

Cheers , have a vision of sitting in a Taverna with a carafe of local wine for a fiver .

We go to places like that here but getting less and less .
There were three of us in 2018 and we had a decent meal for just over 30 Euro in an out of the way place and we were struggling to get a meal for all of us over 50 Euro to spend a note that I had.

How would you rate Crete, Corfu, Zakinthos and Skiathos against each other?

Mate just back from Corfu said 15 eu for a cocktail, 9 eu vodka coke , 5 eu a pint .

Wanting to book Crete for next year , anyone know if similar prices ?

The owner is a pub landlord and certainly wouldn’t choose expensive places . He sells beer in his pub 2.50 a pint here 🙂
kafelonia. about 4 - 5 euros for lust less than a pint. small bottles about the same or just less

gone up a lot since then. Prices are now about par with the uk. kleftico is now anything from 16E to 20E. for 2 a shard starter and main meal is between 40 - 50 euros (that includes a water and 2 pints)

just back from there last week agree on beer prices didnt see anything cheaper, but thought food was cheap tho - decent main meal, fish or meat no more than 14/15e, and food was superb quality imo

we go to the greek island because of the food. I love lamb kleftico and would eat it 5 days from 7. It has definatley gone up to nearer 18euros or more. few years ago you would get greek potato's (lovely) and solid pieces of veg in with it. Not now, pieces of potato and a slice or 2 of carrot. Still tastes delicious though. It would appear that the greeks are in a no win situation, they have to pay more for the food stuff but cannot pass on that price totally to the tourist. Hence a lot of meals are bulked out with rice / pasta or chips.

i do know what you mean, i stayed at Lourdas with my dad. Ill be honest there was only 7/8 restaurants on the front and we didnt walk up the hill to others.
It was noticeable their government clearly cracking down on taxes as well as they constantly asked if we were paying cash or card

I noticed that as well. they would write on the top of the bill / order if we were paying by cash or card. Always asked when ordering the meal.
I read something about that, but I cannot remember where or in what context.

It's a shame that you didn't venture up the hill as Liza's Grill with Cafe Platanos (a bar ran by a bloke from Newport who has been in Kefalonia for about forty years) are both great. The bloke at Cafe Platanos has range of hundreds of bottled beers available.

Hi mate ,I'm off there on Monday for 25 nights 😄
I feel like a stuck record in here but I love the place . I'd say prices arent give away, food and drink wise but you can get some right bargains on digs and go posh for not much . Middle and South of the island you lose the crowds . Some places get busy but it's a better grade of punter as its a bit further .
Mountain options
Spili ,decent size pretty village , plenty food options etc . Great area
Gerakari is close to that .
Invalid/outdated Link Removed
stayed here a few times . Village much smaller than spili .
Anopolis ,foot of white mountains, 2 taverns with nice rooms above . Fantastic local food . Amazing spot . Owner will take you up the foothills of Pachnes in his jeep for a few euro . Aradena gorge ,short drive away .
Basic coastal spot . Sfinari. Paid 31 euro a night for twin room . Fish the owner caught that day for dinner .
Pretty pretty coastal places
Palaiochora ,horasfakion .
Matala beach where joni Mitchell lived for a bit in the 60s . Very cool spot . All these places easy drives from Chania .
Pm me if you want owt specific.
We do motorbike, hike , chill mix on our trips
Just realised you're the same poster as boat trips to milos 👍

Cheers , I think we decided Crete is big enough to enjoy for about 18 days . We can fly there in about 1.5 hrs and about 50 eu . We are looking at end of May into June . I’m guessing weather settled by then ?

I've never been that time but I'd think so , mountains can mean clouds of course . Summer is mad hot . Sept October in the 20s which I love . In a car you'll come across places on your travels . I normally do about 2 weeks but recently retired . My mates there now ,been out 3 weeks already . Loutro is a boat ,hike only option so that never gets too busy. All the taxi type boats are great down the south

Thanks , will plan once flights are out . I thought Greece had become more popular this year due to food and booze being bargain prices so quite surprised with the prices quoted

Not something I'm aware of tbh . I'm not a wine drinker ,I dare say the house stuff in the mountains is cheap . We tend to do one main evening meal and 2 or 3 beers .
I think Instagram etc has helped Greece ,lots of it is stunning and reasonably unspoilt.
