Goodbye Marcus North

North withdrew for family reasons.
So with Key favourite for the job looks like we're stuck with the Hundred given who the current sponsors are.
With this and the Rafiq affair I'm rapidly fearing the death of the game I used to love.
So Marcus is one of us. He's said FTECB

I genuinely have no idea who the 16.4 sponsors are, are we talking about sky who also employ key?

Mate the 100 is staying no matter who was appointed.

Pulled out for 'family reasons'. Great news. Hope they appoint Key and give us all a laugh.

Very dubious about Key getting the job - I’ve long since worried he’d be one of the ‘bites the hand that feeds’ kind of people who would turn his back on county cricket if he got a whiff of money and/or power.

One of the obedient pundits for the Hundred.

totally agree. more becaue he's such a greedy fat knacker who'd bite anything near him, hand or otherwise and would probably turn his back on cricket for a whiff of a corned beef slice nevermind money or power

Everyone is critical of a lot of stuff but never offers any solutions

Who would you give it to?

Not many people applied and we don’t want the safe Giles type

Key will get the position by default. All credible candidates either refused to apply or withdrew. Don't believe North withdrew for family reasons; he's have known the implications for his family before he applied. Suspect he found restrictions imposed in carrying out the role.
FTECB.

The stuff about the wider county championship will be decided by the high performance review not key

I listen to all the sky pods and key says a lot of stuff specifically about the coaches and how the test and white ball teams should be ran that a lot on here seem to agree with

I like it’s someone outside the game a bit too, not just the same names

There’s no secanrio where he would ever appoint Chris silverwood never mind make him selector too

That’s a start ain’t it?

People seemingly y don’t want him as they don’t like his jokes on sky. Not interested in that myself

Wasn't aware he cracked jokes on sky. We can all talk a good game. Fact is he's a failed test cricketer with no experience of Cricket administration. My original argument still stands.

I didn’t realise I had to offer a solution. I’ll make sure to send my expenses form into FTECB for my working out over the next few days now that I’m on the selection panel though ;).

Look, it’s quite simple - as a Durham supporter who has already been hurt time and time again at their hands, I’m very dubious about FTECB and their ‘vision’ for county cricket. I worry that Rob Key will be prepared to do their bidding, as opposed to doing what’s best for county cricket. That was the sole reason for my post and I stand by my judgement of the bloke until such a time that he proves us wrong. I really really want to be wrong on this one, but it’s very much a ‘once bitten, twice shy’ sort of stance that I will always take on issues relating to FTECB until proven otherwise.

All that is based around the assumption that he’ll actually be allowed to do what he wants to do though - history suggests FTECB don’t want independent thinkers.

Yeah but there is no way Rob Key is introducing major changes to the county game mate, he might fiddled with the competitions slightly, but that will be it

his role is improving the test and white ball teams

I get you dont like the ECB, and I dont either for the Durham issue, but i dont think you have to go straight to the wider game on every issue

Specifcally for improving the 2 England sides who would you have that is realistically better?

thats the point I am making. The last thing we need is another Ashley Giles type.

Ashley Giles has history of cricket administration

I cant believe that people would just appoint someone because theyve done the right courses and tick a few boxes

Beggars belief tbh

but thats just my opinion

Come on then, who would you appoint?

None of you are suggesting any names, just criticise criticise criticise

haway

Expect the worst, hope for the best.

Until proven otherwise my cynicism will remain.

On Key, I’m dubious that a failure as a Test cricketer knows all the answers and all the solutions to the ‘Team England’ problem. I suppose ultimately the position shouldn’t have been able to be applied for - they should draft a shortlist of people, be it former coaches or former captains/players that they do actually feel could fill the role and go after them.

Thats not really how it works is it in sport, the best players dont make the best coaches and administraros, they never have.

I'd even suggest a bloke who knows both sides, success and failure, is more suited

BTW his test average would average more than any other debutant bar 1 since Joe Root if he played in this era ;)

just saying

That's how appointments work. You list essential and desirable qualifications and you draw up a shortlist on how many boxes applicants tick.
I'd be asking the question why have so many suitable candidates either not been interested or turned down the approach. I'd then adjust the job specification accordingly. That's not criticism,it's suggesting constructive amendments to make the best appointment.
