Gooch is awful

He's a good player, but just another target for the abusers on here who cant see it. Some go out of their way to deride ourplayers.

We could have Messi in our team, but have 2 poor games in a row and some on here would call him shite.
He's been at the club for 10 years plus and has never improved, 2 games ffs

Typical message board horseshit. He plays well, you claim it's a fluke, he plays poorly, you and your ilk call for his head. And yet, every manager here since he's been here seems to rate him. Coleman sent him to the reserves for a while and still praised how Gooch used it to become a better player. As noted, there isn't a manager in our current division who wouldn't be happy to have him. But the bitchathon on here continues.

He loves the city, loves the club, busts a gut every week, isn't afraid to take people on, and puts chances on a plate for our strikers more weeks than not. He's also played 8 positions since he's been here. Yeah, his defensive positioning is dodgy sometimes, and he dribbles into blind alleys, although less lately than the past. Even against Arsenal, he's out of position at left back and struggling against Pepe, and you could question him ... until you saw how much worse Denver Hume was there.

He's nearing 200 league appearances with the club. He is a far better player than the kid who got thrown into the Prem by Moyes, although sure, he'll never be a Premier League guy, which is clear now. It really is high time the vendetta stopped. If he's bad on the day, fine, say so. But cut the "get rid", "never want to see him again," "waste of a shirt" nonsense. It's pathetic.

Excellent post mate. Unfortunately there's far too many absolute helmets on this board who are far too thick to see what's in front of them.

He frustrates the Hell out of me because I know he could be so much better but everything you say here is true.

I didn't post get rid, never want to see him again, waste of a shirt. I said he's never improved.
His record speaks for itself. He's a valuable and versatile squad member who has four assists to his name and is on course to provide another six or so should he stay fit. Park the trolling man, you just make yourself look clueless.
His record does speak for itself, back to back relegations and a fourth season in League 1.

Gotta grant you that (although I did make the case he has improved). But plenty of others have said it, in this thread. Your post was the moment I snapped.

You need to stop letting emotions get in the way of facts mate, the lad has had every chance to improve over the years with different teams, managers and coaches but has never kicked on. It is what it is, a lad who gives 100% , loves the club, but at the end of the day has found his level in league 1 and even then when up against the better teams usually struggles.

Large, repeated dollops of wanton absurdity tend to get on my nerves after a while. Not apologizing for that.

He's a better player than 5 years ago. Still inconsistent, but his game has a lot more elements. Even this year, you can see him picking out targets on crosses at a level better than what he did in the past.

I think we'll have to agree to disagree mate, If this club is going to move forwards, then the likes of Gooch will have to be moved on.

Mate its about opinions that's all, it's not personal to him, I just personally think he has been very very poor.
Let's all remember it was against a very poor Donny team full of teenages.
Also let's all not get carried away with the team performance, Donny were awful

This sums it up perfectly

Never understand the abuse certain players get on here. I am sure they don’t get that during a game as it is so counter productive and shatters confidence with so many.
Sure players like Rodwell downing tools you kind of understand that.

Used to get on really well with Michael Smith (Lad now established at Rotherham - Wallsend Mag :)...)
Was openly telling me once about how the crowd being on his back effected his game. He said that he became far more rigid with balls bouncing off his shins etc. Once he relaxed was a much improved player.
Often gets lost that these are very young lads and they can struggle mentally.

Never boo and I shout and scream for everything, always support every player wearing the Swindon shirt.
Even when we are 5-0 v Citeh I will keep going to the end, shouting and supporting encouragement.

It’s a forum for opinions and more importantly all about the support during the games.
He frustrates the Hell out of me because I know he could be so much better but everything you say here is true.

Summed up perfectly in that comment “He frustrates the hell out of me because I know he could do so much better.”
That is really it at this level, the consistency of players.
2 games a decent 8/10 then a below par 6/10. I guess you have to accept if they were better they would be playing in the Championship or higher.

To me now all about the desire and commitment.
Remember the lad Adebeyo we had up front, he would try all sorts and get pelters. Many Swindon fans would laugh and think he was shite. I could see a player in there. Dropped to Walsall and now an established Championship player at Luton.

Half of your current players are simply not good enough for the Championship.
It’s the way it is. Get a squad capable of getting you out and then rebuild again.
You have the infrastructure behind you. Exciting times ahead.

In what way has he improved ?

He'd help himself and prevent the hating if he just concentrated on the football and not the arguing and arm waving, every time something goes against him.

He'd be immeasurably better if he learned to take the correct options as they present themselves.

He did play well at Doncaster, but there were several occaisions when he shot, when that wasn't the best or most obvious option.

That is peoples problem with him - his poor decision making

Well calling him a useless pratt makes it a bit personal bob

Theres a lot of similarities to seb larsson for me..

High work rate, loyal, passionate and a really good squad player.

However I think most (including myself) are a bit disappointed that a player who has played in prem and championship doesnt deliver more in league 1.

Appreciate his loyalty through our worst period just wish he could push on a little qnd be a more prominent player for us. He deserves it for the loyalty tbh
