A lot of the advice on here about it coming with instinct the more you play is bang on. However, if you try to watch the ball out of the bowlers hand it can give you a little bit longer to play your shot so that might help you. The general principle though is if it’s pitched up close to you, play straight. If it’s very close you drive it (might be too hard to do that if you’ve just started). If it’s short and you think it’ll go over the stumps get on the back foot and play a cross batted shot, either a pull or a cut. If it’s not short or very close to you, block it. You can always just block it for a while at the start of your innings though. You’ll find the longer you’re in, the easier batting gets. Don’t worry about taking your time and don’t try to emulate the T20 pros who can whack it straight away.
