Getting in to playing at an older age

Briefly mate many moons ago you will have played with KA AB DB what not

Spent most of my time over the dark side

No doubt we have crossed paths pal, I almost went up and watched today and was going to jump into the winter nets earlier this season.
Just as well you didn't.... it was a bloodbath (not from Hylton POV though!)

A question for the more experienced players here. I’m finding it a challenge knowing which shot to play and when. Basically judging line and length.

I’m working on the assumption that you try and score runs off anything wider than off stump. Getting on the front foot to fuller deliveries and back foot on shorter deliveries? Anything straight I just try and defend.
A lot of the advice on here about it coming with instinct the more you play is bang on. However, if you try to watch the ball out of the bowlers hand it can give you a little bit longer to play your shot so that might help you. The general principle though is if it’s pitched up close to you, play straight. If it’s very close you drive it (might be too hard to do that if you’ve just started). If it’s short and you think it’ll go over the stumps get on the back foot and play a cross batted shot, either a pull or a cut. If it’s not short or very close to you, block it. You can always just block it for a while at the start of your innings though. You’ll find the longer you’re in, the easier batting gets. Don’t worry about taking your time and don’t try to emulate the T20 pros who can whack it straight away.

I could only ever read a wrist spinner, mainly because of the standard I played at, funnily enough I foubd it easier to read a better standard of a wrist spinner, and once ended up 55 not out as a decent wrist spinner wheeled us out for something like 8 for 100 odd.
It was against a team from Sheffield University staff, he was a professor of something or other, (probably aeronautics or summat)
Most of the "Spinners" I played against had as much idea of where it was going to go as I did!
But I think was George Hirst, the old Yorkshire tweaker who said
"If the Batsman thinks it spinning, then its spinning"

Don’t let your eyes light up to the slower bowlers.

I used to bowl “ spin” and the majority of my wickets came from batsmen opening their shoulders and not judging the speed, line or length.

Remember a finals day at Washington and two opposing batters were taking any old single to get off strike, not because I’m a fantastic bowler but because I was slow and awkward with a sprinkling of accuracy.

Only advice I can give on batting mind as I was absolutely atrocious. Typical number 11 .

How you doing mate? Long time no see

I’ve been moved up the order one place for our game on Saturday. I didn’t play last weekend as I wasn’t well and we got skittled out for 50 odd.

First home game on Saturday so looking forward to it. Just hope it stops raining.
nowt wrong with moving up the order mate....skittled out for 50 is reason enough
Best of luck at the weekend

There was a guest on the Yorkshire v Sussex commentary just now talking about over 50's, 60's and 70's cricket just now and how much its growing and how popular it is. Many teams have 2nds, 3rds and 4th teams. They're even planning over 80's because many of the over 70 players are in their 80's.

Well if I did well in my first game then today was my welcome to cricket.

We got the opposition all out for 130. We thought this was a very gettable target. Not a lot happened in the field personally this week. I didn’t see that much of the ball.

When it was our turn to bat things didn’t go well. The wicket had deteriorated quite badly and the ball was keeping really low. By the time I got in it was clear we’d be trying to draw the game as no chance we were knocking off the runs required.

I think I lasted 4 deliveries. I was facing a spinner who would loop the ball up into the air above head height before it dropped down a few yards in front of me. Pretty much every ball was a full toss. He was really annoying to face as the ball was coming down at an awkward trajectory. I lost my patience and came down the wicket to slog one only to inside edge it onto the stumps. Gutted.

Our final 2 batsmen almost saw out the draw but unfortunately we were all out in the penultimate over.

Still a really enjoyable day. We go again next week.

I haven't read the previous posts but this one sums me up. I used to play u13's, 15's & u18's up to around 1997 when I was around 15. Played a charity novices game last September and did ok but more importantly fell in love with it again. I was thinking why on earth did I give the game up. Joined nets with local second team in the winter, was so nervous but I did enjoy it. Played 4 games this season so far. I've loved every minute. First game I took 4 wickets and got 19 runs I was buzzing. Has not got any way near as well since but loving it. One major problem though I seem to get injured every game. Hamstring today at start of fielding, meant I couldn't bowl and in pain now. Hoping I'll be back in a week or 2 but also hoping I stop getting injured, it's the only thing putting a downer on it.

I read the first three sentances and was about to advise coming down the wicket to slog him

It’s okay I got my first game of the season in Thursday. Playing Middlesbrough Midweek League, we are in the bottom division and mainly play to keep in touch as a group, with only a handful playing properly on a weekend. We were up against a side from the top division in the cup. All their bowling was the above loopy rubbish and that was enough to bowl us out for 69. I bowled the second over of their innings…. 6 6 6 . 6 6. Home in time for Coronation Street. The lad who ‘murdered’ me plays for Washington 1s and I think played for Whickham for a few years too. I’ve played nothing better than NYSD Div 4 or Sunday Prem, brought me back down to earth 😂

Just turned 48 mate, body of a 78 yr old. But that’s another story, still think I’m 21 every Friday.

Dip in to the cricket forum just to try and keep up, miss it like f*ck to be honest.

How’s the bat business going?
Going well mate. Busy start to the season but I’m expecting it to slow down for the next couple of months.

When the slow down happens it’s time to start shaping my own bats. Have done part mades in so hoping an actual sellable bat will emerge soon!!

Aye, course it had...sure yer not from Yorkshire....;)
Nah only joking mate....hated tweakers...I would have done the same thing, but if you are playing for the draw, its really a shot you should ignore...

It happens mate, we need 4 offa the last over once and the bloke at the other end blocked 5 offa 6..We were only 7 wkts down, but he wanted to keep his average....which was probably about bloody 15

Can remember a lad doing that once at the end of an innings when we had plenty of wickets in hand you obviously have to go for it. Next game the captain went down the whole batting order in the changing room and announced said individual as 'Jack'
