It's fine as long as she gets her fingernails pulled out so she understands how pleasant it is. I hate cats and still think this shouldn't be done.

This is a very American thing and it's extremely cruel for the cat as it involves amputation of the bone not just the claw. If you have a cat already don't do it. If you haven't got a cat - please don't get one if your Mrs is remotely houseproud. There are such things as nail covers but I've no idea how effective they are and they probably fall off due to wear and tear.
