its the big day out for the geordies today. Their fiercest rivals away (man u).
a fixture which has eclipsed all other footballing rivalries since the keegan 90s due to their annual tussle for silver wear and both clubs been dead massive worldwide.
imagine the banter on the toon away buses today? Title decider this un. Must win. Bragging rights doon the dole on Monday.

Yes its Man Utd Versus the Mags

oh i think you have lol

Never seen it associated with any official bit of sunderland football club literature since the 1970's.
For 120 YEARS nobody could find one reference to the word in ANY club programme or literature, NOT F**KING ONE.

It's pointless trying to re-invent history.

thats because the word wasnt invented until recent times, everyone knows the nickname is the black cats but i dont think many people would be insulted if they refered to us mackems either,i know i dont and i was born in durham

I'd sooner pick my own nickname rather than lay down and accept one from local rivals.

[DOUBLEPOST=1386418546][/DOUBLEPOST]they sing 'geordies' at football matches. sunderland fans do not sing 'geordies'[/quote]
You must be young if you've never heard Sunderland fans sing "Geordies" ... It was regular fare in the Fulwell End. Oh dear, "We are the Geordie Boot Boys" ... how many hundreds of times did I sing that at Roker?
The fact is we were never ashamed of it in the past, post-John Hall we are ashamed (or some of us, not me) because he took it upon himself to re-invent the term to include only those who bought his black and white replica strips. Too many of our Wear-based fans ( the vast majority of our support, admittedly) bought into that. Therefore Geordie=Mag.
It is, of course, utter nonsense.
Some Geordies support us; some County Durham folk support them. And lest we forget, some Northumbrians support us too.
That is the way it is.

I can remember Geordie Mackem chants in the 80's I don't class myself as a Geordie or a Mackem coming from Durham but everytime I bumped into a Mag I got Mackem Bastard so in the end rather than arguing I just went aye right your point is your from the same place as me.

does it really bother you when people refer to us as mackems

It bothers me to be called a mackem, i wasn't one before the word was invented and i'm not one now.
If people branded as "mackems" are too soft to stand up for themselves that's their problem, not mine.

Full respect to all the Yackers, Vauxies, Townies and Geordies who followed/still follow sunderland.

Or maybe we are glad to be disassociated with the "Geordie nation", yer kna, punching horses and smashing up the city and other such Geordie traditions. I want no part of that.

Why are you anti-Sunderland?
