Geertruida

The thing with losing Geertruida is we're effectively losing one player that can play in a few key positions. It leaves us light in defence and cm. Can't see us signing a CB and CM in the next day can you?
CM would be more important than CB imo

As much as he can play there geertruida as a CB in a back 4 scares me

Oh I thought Liverpool just wanted a straight loan. I'd be more inclined to request a player from Liverpool for the rest of the season tbh. Maybe Jones or Chiesa?

They do. They want us to cancel the loan, so they can have him on a 6 month loan from Leipzig.

We’ll obviously be telling Leipzig we want a decent amount of money to cancel the loan, Leipzig will then have to factor that in to the loan fee they demand from Liverpool.

Yes, but there has to be a way of doing it where we are well compensated.

We can't just let clubs force our season long loans to be cut short without us getting something equal or better out of the deal (I'm not saying this isn't the case).
We will get compo. We paid a season loan fee. Well at least get some of that back

At the end of the day he's not first choice in any position he plays. His versatility is obviously a massive help at times. We're fine at right back and centre half so if we can get two holding midfielders in to cover himself and Xhaka while hes out then let him go if he wants to go.
I guess this is a better way to look at it.

I really liked Geertruida, he was quality on the ball - so assured, but he was never going to be first choice CB/RB and his natural position isn't CM.

All depends on who the replacement is...

And do what?
On paper we can block it we still might if we can’t get something done. However it makes no sense too, the player wants the move, Reggie doesn’t completely rate him for whatever reason also. It makes sense for all parties to find a solution. I do like we won’t act like bellends with players on one hand, on the other I don’t think we will leave ourselves short either. Whether it will be to the level of gurty at this point I have my doubts. It’s a shame all round, I wanted us to sign him permanently, but seeing him not start some games when we’ve not exactly been full strength it always felt he’d be going back in the summer anyway. We should get a good deal out of it though as we’re coming with a very strong hand.

Wait....are Liverpool wanting him on loan for the rest of the season or buying him?

I thought it was to buy him.

Gutted because he’s excellent but nonetheless he’s been an excellent utility player and not first choice so it’s not panic stations just yet. I think it makes midfield and CB areas of need to improve in though which isn’t ideal.
Suspect we knew this was on the cards last week, hence not playing him.
Wonder if we can do an Abrahams and buy for 20 then sell for 30?

"Won't stand in his way due to the scale of the opportunity" and "no break clause in the deal".

I do appreciate our stance on that when we were in the Championship where we were very much of the view that not blocking PL moves would ultimately encourage more players to come here, but now that we're actually in the PL and losing him makes us lose depth at 3 positions (we obviously won't be signing a PL level RB, CB and CM in January), I'd be a bit more selfish if I were the club here like.
I wouldn't stand in the way either. If you give me money. Otherwise, they can struggle on until the summer.

I think the messageboard's opinion of the lad and the manager/club's opinion is different.

We're not standing in his way because he's not looked like establishing himself as first choice, is only on loan and is apparently on a fortune wage wise.

I'd be happy if we keep him and the timing is poor, but can understand why they might want to get someone who has a longer term future here.

Haven't read the whole thread, but I wouldn't mind a swap deal with Curtis Jones. Think it'd suit all 3 parties perfectly (except maybe the home grown quota on Liverpool's side)
