Exactly...The media care more about it than your average football fan, apart from maybe a few still living in the Stone age.
I don't now, nor ever have been the slightest bit interested in the sexual orientation of a Wednesday football player
I have obviously been frightened to death by their sodding lack of orientation when playing in the back 4..
the rest of it....leave it alone, who on earth is bothered?

And it might be even worse from the club's own fans on social media if things don't go their way. Look at the insulting LJ has been getting lately, because people are fishing for laughs and likes.

Aye, it's all connected to the same thing, mate, and that is some people see football matches as a place where they can be absolute arseholes. Whether it's the manager, or the players, or the opposition, or whomever else.

A colleague of mine played representative football in the military around 2004ish. She was hetrosexual but said pretty much the whole squad were in same sex relationships.

Can’t remember the last time I heard a racist comment at the SOL.
 
Someone high profile who has retired will come out imho and once the interest has died down a few more will. Nobody will care beyond the initial’I didn’t expect them to be gay’

A few high profile RL and RU players have come out, again nobody has got much to say other than offering support
 
It would make more sense if those that want to ‘come out’ all did it on the same day.. reduce the focus on 1 individual and create a support network.. Those that wish to keep their lives private can still do so..

I thought Thomas Hitzlsperger might have been the catalyst for that which you speak, but he came out in 2014. Can't think of many since.
