Gay premier league footballer

People seem to forget that Thomas Hitzlelsperger already came out years ago and nobody cared. Made loads of appearances in the PL and for Germany.
He'd retired before coming out though. The media have built this thing up that no footballers have come out as gay while playing and nothing else will be as big a story to them.

I have a mate who is gay, and about twenty years ago when we were at college together, he actually had an affair with a quite well-known Premier League footballer.

Only a few of us within his select circle knew about it, although there were certain rumours about it around our college, and it was just one of those things to us, other than it being a bit strange seeing our mate's current squeeze appearing on Match of the Day now and then.

My mate was devastated though when the manager of the club in question found out and the first thing he did was to peddle him out of the club to the first team that would take him.

Why do they have to come out?

Do straight footballers have to come out and tell everyone they’re straight?

It’s 2021 ffs sexuality shouldn’t need proclaiming from the rooftops to be accepted.

Sad that it still has to be a thing tbh. Do they even need to say what sexuality they are? Does anyone even care? Why do people need a label of gay or straight, not just in football but in society in general? They even ask it in job applications and I've honestly never known why. They're footballers, just play football. Obviously talk about it publically if they want to but if they're happy in their personal life it's no ones business who they date in their own time. I get the "breaking down barriers" bit, and yes there will be that 1 idiot in the crowd who dishes out abuse but I really don't think anyone would care in this day and age.

I've been around changing rooms all my life playing football and the banter can be harsh sometimes when looked at from outside of that bubble and I've played on teams where players have been gay and literally nothing changes. Banter still the same, everyone got on the same. Wasn't even a moment when he came out as gay and told us etc. Had a team night out and he mentioned something about where he and his boyfriend went for food and was just a normal conversation. I think it all depends how that person themselves feels and how happy they are in their own skin. Thats just my experience anyway.

Good post.

Only the permanently outraged and press want to make it " a thing".

Why should people live their life in secret? Why should they have to live their life hiding what they are?
You know plenty about secrets. You’ve been hiding a little gold ring in your pocket for years. It’s bound to come out soon!

An absolutely nothing story. Someones sexual preference is of no interest whatsoever and has nothing to do with football.

completely agree, it shouldn’t be news, but this is a necessary part of the journey so that it stops being big news.
