That sounds like a fine compromise to me.
I might take a punt seeing as though Rush are done. I do rate YYNot very highly though. Their bassist is amazing.

My question wasn't a criticism of the Music City status by any means. It was just stemming from hope that North East cities gaining or going for Music City status may be able to help. Pop Recs and Fire Station are great venues. Not been to the Peacock for a gig yet, but will be going to see The Fire Doors there. The Riverside venue (Melbourne Street in Newcastle) had iconic status so bands on the rise wanted to play there. Admittedly tours were probably longer then, but if a band is playing Leeds and Glasgow why cant they make another stop between?

I don't see Music city as meaning where all the big gigs are
Most cities have big venues
Probably the opposite to me
How we encourage start ups and small bands and venues and how we all network
You can have a busy big venue with zero buzz around it as far as music goes

We supported Florence Black years ago, lovely set of lads. We’re meant to play in Wales with them but Covid happened.

They make an incredible racket for a 3 piece, lovely to see them doing so well.

When news of small venues closing seems very common elsewhere, we are absolutely blessed with the options we have up here now, apart from a decent arena type, which doesn't bother me at all as nobody I've wanted to see has played there for ages (since Neil & Crazy Horse, probably). Just staying within the Metro routes, in the last year I have enjoyed gigs at the following, and will happily revisit any/all of them:

Sunderland

Fire Station
Pop Recs
Peacock
Bunker

North Tyneside

Engine Room
3 Tanners Bank
Baba Yaga's Loft
Exchange
Playhouse
(Salt Market Social is also good but not been for a while)

Gateshead/Skunksville

Glasshouse 1 & 2
Central Hotel
Station East
Cluny 1 & 2
Cobalt Rooms
Cumberland Arms
Little Buildings
Grove
City Hall
Lubber Fiend
Digital (a great replacement for Riverside which I never liked)
Boilershop
Gosforth Civic

Can think of a few more small places I've not been to, and NX.

Also not averse to a trip down to Teesside - Stockton in particular has a good range of venues.

I would say half of those didn't exist in their current format pre-pandemic. We've never had it so good!

It’s mad the number of venues there are.
 
The mighty Martha back again on 17 July, at the Grove this time, with the excellent Cheekface from LA and Fresh, who also sound great. I'll be very surprised if this doesn't turn out to be the gig of the year.
