Saw Clive Langer tonight launching his new album, 1981 was the year of his last one iirc. If you don’t know him then you’ll know his production work: Dexys, Madness, Costello, Aztec Camera, China Crisis etc. I think there were possibly half a dozen in the audience who were younger than me. Andy Mackay (Roxy Music) got up and did some sax on Shipbuilding which I’ll freely admit I wasn’t aware he’d wrote the music too.
Langers original mid 70s band Deaf School included: Ian Broudie ( Lightning Seeds, Three Lions), Bill Drummond (KLF, former Bunnymen and Teardrop Explodes manager) and Betty Bright (Mrs Suggs). The feller with the lip injections (Dead Or Alive) was a roadie at one point iirc.
I think like Dr Feelgood, Sharks, Kilburn and The High Roads and a few others they were cut off at the knee by the punk explosion and things were nivver tha same for them

I really liked Deaf School back in the mid-70s. They had a residency at Erics with me cousin's band Nasty Pop and I saw them both down at the Roundhouse, with the Stranglers 3rd or 4th on the bill. I would add Nasty Pop to your list of bands who were in the right place at the right time. They had a couple of albums out on Island and were then unceremoniously dumped!
Personal Trainer last Saturday (Grove), Ryley Walker last night (Cluny 2), Bug Club & Getdown Services on Thursday (Pop Recs).

How was Ryley and what sort of stuff was he playing? I had a ticket but couldn't tear meself away from the Leeds match in the end. I loved his first two albums and saw him 3 or 4 times back then but found some of his more recent proggy stuff a bit less appealing!

There's a few videos from the Personal Trainer and Bug Club gigs, as well as the Richard Dawson album launch and loads of others on Chris Trew's Youtube channel.

Ryley was great. Didn't play anything I would describe as proggy. It was a relatively short set, probably due to him feeling under the weather. He played the Anne Briggs song 'go your way' which was a highlight.

State Champs tonight at NX Newcastle
Futureheads in Leeds on Sat

No beers tonight, many beers on Saturday.
Did you have to keep your coat on at NX? Saw Brianjonestown Massacre there couple of weeks back and it was absolutely freezing 🥶
Fat Dog last night at Boilershop- short set (45 minutes?) but highly entertaining.

It’s cold at the back, I was balcony for the support & it was fine, went infront of the sound desk for the main & had a dip in & out the pit. Arms were aching of hoying kids up to crowd surf in the morning 😂

Was good mate aye. Paid for it yesterday mind... few too many back at The Central after.

Didn't catch Tyketto but we enjoyed April Wine's set.

I thought Heep coulda been a little louder, especially Mick's guitar early doors, but I sorta put that down to the venue. I thought Bernie was great.
Great stuff. Bernie is a top class singer. He`s been in the band now almost 40 years and still has his range and power to sing the songs from all of the Heep eras.

Aye, tremendous like.

It sometimes makes you wonder how some manage to keep their voice in nick, whilst others have faded drastically.

Just bought tickets for Florence Black in September.

Got tickets for Moving Pictures on Friday night but can't make my mind up whether to watch the match instead.

I was thinking that. Heep toured a lot too. Must just have a resilient voice or he`s just a proper trained singer.

I`ve heard good reports about them but still feel a bit strange going to see a tribute band. You should go and report back on what they`re like.

Well I was having a read up on him the other day and I don't think he is. He wanted to be a guitarist and fell into singing. He's gigged extensively since forever, has side projects to Heep, and had to recover from career threatening throat problems. Some boy...

I thought he was good crack as well on Saturday actually. "Sometimes I fuck up." 🤷‍♂️

Their youtube stuff is very good. Rush or SAFC? I'm trying to figure out if I can avoid the result and then watch the full 90 when I get back home. :)
