GK, 2 x fullbacks, 2x centre backs, 2x forwards, 2x midfield players (at least one wide player in the latter two).
Too many
It comes to a point where you need to create a pathway to the 1st squad and show a bit faith in our young lads. Tell me what the alternative is? Have a squad of 22 - 25 senior pros? Weve trying that season after season it doesnt work
You also have to factor in the Parkinson doesnt rotate so you will be left with a vastly over sized squad draining our finances whilst youngest after youngest is released without a chance
Until we shift them they are part of the squad and cant be replaced. That is the hard stance I would take
Exactly. I couldn't put it better myself
Again that’s not what I said. That’s not what you’d be doing. You’d be removing redundancy from a squad and allowing young players to have a greater proximity to the first team. That’s all. You might get lucky with one or two but you’d be unlikely to suffer ill effects as we simply don’t use that many players. All the while you’d be making it clear to the talented young players at Safc that they have a slim chance at the club. You can't just throw a load of under 23s who can't beat teams at their level in blind faith they can step up, gooch honeyman and hume got given games so they can get given a chance if they desurve it.
I think some of the retained players will leave, particularly central midfield and McGeady so 7/8 would probably take us to 18/19 experienced playersToo many
What’s the point in young players being in the squad for sake of it, if they won't get minutes send on loanAgain that’s not what I said. That’s not what you’d be doing. Only 24 players played more than 180 mins across all competitions last season. That’s on a season with huge upheaval in the squad and a manager change. Big squads are simply a waste of resources. Limiting the squad size and supplementing the squad with young players is absolutely what an intelligent Safc would do.
It’s what they should have done 2 years ago but they left themselves with a bloated squad making very poor signings in the process. Now a lot of the better young players have left and they’re in a position where the players left aren’t good enough to step up.Again that’s not what I said. That’s not what you’d be doing. I agree we should have kept Robson. And I also agree that the likes of Taylor, Hackett, Hunter will probably wont turn out good effort however you are talking these lads being 5th choice here and I'd rather have some of our lads make up the numbers than some pro like Tommy Smith sitting on his hands earning a packet. You also never know if the chance arose one of these lads might grasp iti dont think we should be putting in players that aren’t very good just to show there’s a pathway. I named 7 players that I would have in but unfortunately afew are going to move on. I think that’s a good number. Having some of the ones you named around the squad doesn’t make sense because they’re not very good and I know you know they’re not the best we’ve had.
If thsts the case then replace them when they leave otherwise they are here and part of the squadI think some of the retained players will leave, particularly central midfield and McGeady so 7/8 would probably take us to 18/19 experienced players
You have to give them an amount of proximity. With 23 senior players they don’t even get the chance to play 11 on 11 in training. They spend all of their time off in other groups. If they’re good enough and show enough they will get minutes. If there are 23 senior pros in front of them they’d have to be outstanding to even get a chance. And as a consequence we’d miss out on players who may need a little more time to acclimatise - whilst discouraging generation after generation in our younger age groups. What’s the point in young players being in the squad for sake of it, if they won't get minutes send on loan
Unless we show we’re serious about committing to youth we'll lose the next lot as well. It’s what they should have done 2 years ago but they left themselves with a bloated squad making very poor signings in the process. Even in January they could have showed some faith, they didn’t have to sign Semenyo or Scowen however Parkinson made the decision to sign both and sit both on the bench ahead of Kimpioka (who’d a goal from the bench in his second last game) and Robson (who’d had a good loan at Grimsby.
Unfortunately the damage has been done and it’ll take afew year to put itself right. The players simply aren’t there now and it’s putting kids as back up for the sake of it.

I‘d say we need at least 8 if not 9

That's another subject. Dont get me on loansWhat’s the point in young players being in the squad for sake of it, if they won't get minutes send on loan
We need to sign better youth and give them a chance rather than selling them and giving a group of failures who can't beat teams at their levelYou have to give them an amount of proximity. While we Are outside of the PL we will always need to fight to carve out a selling point for our youth system. We probably need that if and when we get to the pl too. This is bigger than one season - and certainly more important than a small chance that we may need to give a few throwaway minutes to a young player who might not quite have enough to make it.
Unless we show we’re serious about committing to youth we'll lose the next lot as well.
Yeah I think it depends what position we’re looking at. I just think we’ve already shot our selves in the foot and completely missed the boat on this one but that’s what happens when you have owners that have no long term vision and are solely focused on getting out of the league to sell the club.I agree we should have kept Robson. And I also agree that the likes of Taylor, Hackett, Hunter will probably wont turn out good effort however you are talking these lads being 5th choice here and I'd rather have some of our lads make up the numbers than some pro like Tommy Smith sitting on his hands earning a packet. That clearly needs to be part of it but if the squad size is too big, we simply won’t be able to give them chances in any caseWe need to sign better youth and give them a chance rather than selling them and giving a group of failures who can't beat teams at their level
