Its not exactly based on a true story like the film says it is but its not that far off.

I managed to find some true crime facts on what the film is based on, here have a read but I warn you its quite a gruesome read.

American Animals. Don't want to give too much away, but it's a heist film that's done partly as a standard "based on a true story" dramatisation, and partly as a documentary with interviews from the people who it's based on. I thought it was excellent.

With Fargo the writers admitted a few years ago that the whole "these events are true" caption was completely untrue and purely to suck the audience in.
