European Nights

To be fair we would most likely be in Europe if we were in the Scottish league!

We wouldn't. With the money etc we'd probably be similar to someone like Ross County
Mid week games do there'd be loads of empty seats and barely any away fans bar British/Irish/Dutch opposition.

Ah aye good point that. Hope we never qualify for Europe and play in places like Spain, Italy, Poland, Croatia because we'd have a few empty seats at home.

I'm just looking at tonight's fixtures in both the Europa League and the Europa Conference.
Some famous names in both. Ajax, Slovan Bratislava, Olympiakos, Dynamo Kyiv, Rapid Vienna,Fiorentina. Also a few I've never heard of.
Be absolutely brilliant if we could, at some point, be playing in a European competition. Very difficult to qualify I know, and a long way to go before we have the possibility of doing so, but SAFC v Dinamo Zagreb has a certain appeal to it.
I'm sure KLD is looking forward to us playing Olympique de Marseille under the lights on a Thursday night😉
I used to dream of following Sunderland to play in Europe, I wouldn’t take a gold pig and go to Europe to watch us nowadays (assuming it ever happens).

was thinking the same last night watching villa. all these clubs in england who are similar status to us or in some cases much 'smaller' have played in europe since 2000:

man united
man city
arsenal
spurs
chelsea
liverpool
villa
leicester
everton
west ham
brighton
stoke
fulham
birmingham
ipswich
leeds
fulham
blackburn
southampton
millwall
newcastle
boro
bolton
portsmouth
wigan
swansea
hull
southampton
wolves
burnley
bradford

surely its our turn at some point?
Mind boggling that a team with crowds well in excess of 40k can’t get a sniff of euro football.

Just a thought, Hearts are away to PAOK next week. I’ve been on the Hearts forum, it will cost them a fortune to get there and back. They are having to come back via Rhodes, Corfu, Rome or Düsseldorf and as soon as the match was announced all sensible flights went through the roof.

I'd looked at return flights for Madrid for Celtic last season from Manchester, when a journo had leaked the fixtures.

Return flights were £150 went up to £700 once the fixtures got confirmed a few hours later.

people laugh at the conference league but I'd love to see sunderland play in anything european

If anything it's the one I'd most want to be in, to be honest. Random teams and very little riding on it for either club - so far less chance of violence or issues. Also if we were in it we'd be one of the bigger teams (based on income) so that'd be good too as you'd get to go further (you'd hope). Just pure fun for supporters.

If you were in the Europa League tickets would be more expensive/ harder to get, and there's always the chance you draw a team that's just a bit too strong for us (but still not a glamour tie) and that's the end of that. Also, people would be taking it more seriously/ be upset when we're inevitably knocked out. Less chance of drawing a random team from Slovenia or Liechtenstein as well.

Champions League is pretty unrealistic obviously.
